When a college town is great people who have zero connection to the university stay there as well as businesses. Cities like Madison, Boulder and Austin.
When a college town stays small it means that people do not want to live there. Development goes where the demand is hence the reason for the growth of Austin
UT created the atmosphere where people wanted to live so it is a college town and IMO the best because of the growth it has created in Austin.
The idea of a great small college town is nonexistent because it is an oxymoron

List isn't legit without Fayetteville.
Baton Rouge isn't a college town.
And I've been to Laramie. WTF is it doing on this list?

Athlon is the same group who listed Fayetteville like 12th out of the SEC college towns one year. It's easily in the top 3 no matter how you judge it.

Athlon has too much Clay Travis stink on it to be taken seriously.

1. Athens (Georgia) No doubt. Anyone who disagrees has simply never been there.
2. Madison (Wisconsin) Never been. Heard it's cool except for all of the Yankees.
3. Austin (Texas) Coolest city in TX. Women!
4. Boulder (Colorado) Beautiful, snobbish.
5. Ann Arbor (Michigan) See 2.
6. Oxford (Ole Miss) J Crew convention. Big payroll.
7. Eugene (Oregon) You wanna see some dumb shites, go to OR. Pretty state though.
8. Palo Alto (Stanford) See 4.
9. Chapel Hill (North Carolina) The intellect in NC huddles around it's schools. Otherwise it's a scary state.
10. Charlottesville (Virginia) never been. Heard UVA's nice.
11. Seattle (Washington) Awesome city.
12. Knoxville (Tennessee) Lost me here. Must have been a UT grad on the panel.
13. State College (Penn State) Sweatshirts and ugly coeds.
14. Berkeley (California) If you want drugs, they got drugs.
15. Baton Rouge (LSU) if you can't have fun in BR, you don't have a pulse.
16. West Point (Army) Beautiful place. Not a great college atmosphere.
17. Clemson (Clemson) Clemson is a nice campus, but not a great college town. No cool factor.
18. Tuscaloosa (Alabama) See 17. Good fraternity and sorority houses.
19. South Bend (Notre Dame) I guess it had to be on the list somewhere.
20. Laramie (Wyoming) Been to WY, not to Laramie. Have a friend who is a grad. Said it wasn't awesome.

Even more so with the Craft beer scene/Brewery scene exploding and the redevelopment of downtown and campus over the last 3 years.

I'm surprised that Clemson made the list

And Clemson isn't even really a town. It's one street and then the University.

Clemson may not be the best college town but it beats the hell out of getting hit with stray bullets in 5 points

Man, you need to get out of cajun country and see the other campuses if you think that link you sent is impressive.

I've been to many of what everyone considers the best college towns (Boulder, Oxford, Chapel Hill, Charlottesville) and I'd put the city of Clemson right up there. It's a wonderful place.

Also, Starkville has a bad reputation but it's really not a bad place.

So you don't go to any city, ever?
