watson could have gone anywhere. he chose Clemson.
why was a public university started in GA so early, given the state was basicaly wilderness with no Atlanta at that time.

lol that won't ever happen, unless Clemson doubles the enrollment.
Athens has a lot more demand given so many students there.
The town of Clemson is much smaller, there are no large libraries and courthouses and other institutional buildings like Athens has. Clemson students and alumni are anti- development there.
athens was a new south mill town, even though it was started as a college town. the town itself looks similar to Greenwood Sc to me.

Athens really does look gorgeous. I prefer the mountains here in Fayetteville but I can't deny that would be a great place to live.

i kind of doubut that. morris is overrated. kids aren't going to go to a college if they don't like the place, simply because of an OC.

Georgia being a forward thinking state decided it wanted to start a center of learning founded in a city that would resemble the ancient Greek center of thought and philosophy (Athens). So it selected 40k acres of newly seized land up North that had been virtually untouched.

I'm sure someone is but I couldn't tell you who. It won't happen. UGA houses the original Constitution of the Confederacy and it gets brought out every year on Confederate Memorial Day. I'd like to think that this town and the University has too much care for the preservation of history to let some PC bullshite tear down an otherwise innocuous monument.

It was somewhat unique for it's time.... every other university in the country at the time was private. UGA was the first public one. Today, we think of that as normal. In 1785, it was unique.
Another fun fact, the location of UGA was based on the fact the Oconee was the official dividing line between Georgia and the Creek Nation. Athens/UGA was basically a pioneer town on the edge of "civilization". At the confluence of the North Oconee with the Middle Oconee to form The Oconee River, and with a "copious" spring for fresh drinking water (currently located near the intersection of "Spring" ST and Broad), present day Athens was chosen as the spot for UGA. Quick note.... Athens was created along with UGA. There was no Athens before UGA, and no UGA before Athens.

I agree, having been born in Waycross.
I assume now that Athens being fairly close to Augusta, which basically became the state capital during the Civil war, is how that site was selected.

This is really the key to what makes Athens so wonderful and unique. It has existed for over 200 years as a virtual extension of the University. No other non-major city (except maybe Chapel Hill) can really claim the same.
