I assume now that Athens being fairly close to Augusta, which basically became the state capital during the Civil war, is how that site was selected.

I think it actually had more to do with it being freshly seized Indian land on an unpolluted river basin. Plenty of lumber, fortified on a hill, and ready access to clean water. It was 100 miles north of the then-capital of Louisville (which is roughly equidistant to Augusta). There was just plenty of room and resources up there for a new town/University to grow and expand.

I feel like my thread dedicated to the beauty of Athens is being overlooked by a bunch of ninny arguing

Nobody appreciates this for what it's worth

This is really the key to what makes Athens so wonderful and unique. It has existed for over 200 years as a virtual extension of the University. No other non-major city (except maybe Chapel Hill) can really claim the same

Clemson can, for like 120 years or however long its been. sure some others can too

Clemson is no Athens.

Yea, you have the mountains sure.... but you don't have the culture, history, art, etc. that Athens has.

But for only 120 years. Athens and UGA have existed for almost as long as the country has. Most all of the private institutions that predated UGA either exist in cities like Boston or Hartford or were founded in pre-established towns.

you skipped over the big ol lake.

all kind of history in Clemson, starting with Dr. Clemson and his father in law Calhoun, a big name in SC politics.

The entire town of Pendleton which is basically Clemson is on the national registry of historic places.

every place as a history, if its been around. it is subjective to say one places has more history or bettery history than another. obviously a uga fan has a preference for uga /Athens history.

I talked most Athens and sec on here. he brought up Clemson.

you auburn guys need to take some klonopin and learn how to relax. auburn projected to win SEC this year, you should be happiest person on here.

reality is you just mad I didn't have Auburn in my top 5 SEC towns, despite some people always comparing auburn to my beloved Clemson.

all the auburn fans on here remind me of the angry jock guy in Wedding Crashers who was all jacked up on steroids. lol

speaking of...durden and others, which do you subscribe to?

A) Only freshmen are disallowed from walking under the Arch

B) Only alums are allowed to walk under it

I've heard both from a bunch of different places.

Regarding Ben Epps Airport...

A few months after the Wright Bros made history with their flight in NC, local Athens man Ben Epps built and flew his airplane in Athens, the first flight in Georgia.

He took off from and landed on Washington Street downtown.

Gotta run. Heading to Ted's.

Not in the case of Clemson. Clemson's history is Cherokee history. Are you claiming Cherokee history as Clemson history/tradition?

Cuz if you are.... I can talk alot more about the history of Athens regarding the natives, pre-1785. There's some interesting history that involves the Spanish and the French running off injuns from the coast, who followed the Altamaha to the Oconee to present day Athens.

Indians, and then all the revolutionary war generals who moved to Clemson/Anderson area and got it going, fact that Fort Mill plantation on Clemson's campus near the football stadium was owned by John Calhoun, who was vice president, etc. Dr. Clemson married Calhoun's daughter, and Dr. Clemson was first secretatary of the US department of agriculture if memory serves. Anderson SC near Clemson is known as electric city and it was the first city in the US to have a continuous supply of electric power.

auburnphan can't hold a conversation about anything but gets all mad at people who can. given I lived in Huntsville for 2 years I know most auburn people are more genteel than this uncouth boor
