Mainly the brewery is >>>>>>>>>> than Terrapin, but the beer really holds its own as well.

I know they sell the Athena and Tropicalia around Athens in Korger and Publix and liquor stores, but I'm not sure how far their distribution has gone. They're only a year old.

You do realize Athens is only 25 minutes South of Rome's position, right? The Chattahoochee National Forest is less than an hour to the North.

Being closer to Alabama is not my definition of being cooler.

my opinion, Athens could have a better location, given it was a planned city, they should have located in north Georgia mountains, or over on that lake, lake Oconee I think, probably about 30 minutes from Athens. or in savannah, or coastal Georgia, St Mary's is a good idea. Maybe even put it on on Cumberland Island near St Mary and it would be the only university that you have to take a ferry to get to.

how cool would it be to say, I go to college on a barrier island that you have to take a ferry to get to. lol nobody could argue UGA was the coolest college town in the world then.

my other idea to make Athens better is reduce broad street from 4 lanes to 2 lanes, and throw up more trees, similar to Main Street in Greenville SC.
it would help it feel more quaint.

There's a vision to change Prince Avenue to more of a tree-lined, pedestrian friendly, vibe. Right now it's proposed, but most likely it will take effect very soon.

When it was chartered in 1785, the planners chose the site in then-Jackson County (which had just been seized from the Creek Indians) as a city on a hill next to the North Oconee River. Putting it in the mountains would have been completely unfeasible from a transportation standpoint.

Doubly so for this. Given that the first steam-powered ferry didn't exist until 1811 in NYC, it would have been horribly unfeasible to get to, not to mention that in 1785, there was still the fear of reprisal from England to worry about making a public university on a barrier island an easy target.

Also, if a university existed on Cumberland, 1.) we wouldn't have one of the best naturally preserved islands on the East Coast, and 2.) there would have been a large bridge built over the marshes to get there and the isalnd would be lousy with condos and hotels. It would be awful.

As PNW pointed out, there are already proposals to do this on Prince Avenue. I've heard something similair for Broad, but it's a main thoroughfare for the town so the most you will ever get are some pedestrian islands. Plus, a 2-lane Broad on gamedays would be a total nightmare.

I'll check with my buddy at our liquor store. Sounds like a good excuse to take a ride if he can't get it.

I wish they'd just go ahead and do this on Prince. There's so much feet dragging going on, it's mind boggling. Aesthetically, it'd look so much better.

There's only so much ignorance I can address in one post. If there's any argument to be made for an alternate location, it likely would have been to put the university near present day Lumber City at the intersection of the Ocmulgee and Oconee Rivers, where the Altamaha forms and begins its run down to the coast. It would have actually been closer to the then-capital of Louisville, GA (and, subsequently, Milledgeville) and obviously closer to Savannaah.

i paint a picture, i let others work out the details.

they could have located it near downtown Savannah though. ATL didn't want to help Savvanah though.

pretty sure there was a road b/t atlanta and Nooga, so campus location in n. ga mountains was possible.

plus they could have changed locations in the 1800's sometime. many universities changed locations, wake forest comes to mind.

athens is aight though where it is. make sense for it to be near atlanta, given most of students are from there.

you guys lucky this is a SEC forum or i would have started a Clemson picture thread to counter this one. you would then see why we got Watson out of GA.

Once again, the University was chartered in 1785. Before any other public university in the country. Atlanta or "Terminus" wasn't even a thought until the late 1830s. The site of the University for a while was basically in the North GA wilderness. Hell, the Creek and Cheorkee Indians were still being removed from the northern parts of the state until 1825.

Besides all the reasons listed above, Chattanooga didn't exist until the Cherokee were driven out in the 1830's (there's a breathtaking memorial of the Trail of Tears and the removal by the Aquarium up there). So, no, wrong once again.

There would be absolutely no reason for this. Not only was the city of Athens already established around the University and thriving by the mid-1800s, the Civil War meant 1.) no way was there money to spare on relocating a perfectly fine University location, and 2.) the Reconstruction era had Athens in prime location near the new capital of Atlanta.
