Of course, some of it is starting #1 and beating everyone they've played. If I voted, I'd be tempted to put FSU at #1 right now but that could also change if Alabama wins out since they have a harder schedule down the stretch.

However, your post clearly spins the quality of FSU's Miami win. Clemson blowout is the most impressive of any team this year but at A&M is a better W than Miami by any margin. Ole Miss 25-0 is as around as impressive as the Miami W for FSU.

Does that mean that A&M will plummet in the computer rankings on the 24th because they beat a shitty LSU team?

Let it go bru. You're gonna be 4th in the west. Be proud. It will be A&M's 2nd best season in over a decade.

Maybe, but it's how sports are. They "defend" their title. Even if they played a weaker schedule, it's seen as "You have to actually let them DEFEND it if they go unbeaten, not their fault the teams they played sucked."

Flawed? Maybe, but it has some integrity to it.

Though Bama could easily have three regular season wins over teams that finish with 10 wins

Virginia Tech: Possible (would have to win out)
A&M: Likely
Auburn: Likely
LSU: not likely
Ole Miss: Likely

That's four

Meh, teams aren't always allowed to defend their title... Don't get me wrong, I think Alabama should be allowed to defends theirs, but it doesn't happen very often.

I'm against preseason rankings in general, TBH. Rank the teams after they do something on the field.

Miami won't be ranked after they lose to Virginia Tech and Duke (will have 7-wins when they play Miami...whodathunk?) in consecutive weeks.

Ban/avatar bet? Miami loses both, I wear A&M (or Bama.. your choice) avatar for a month. Miami wins both you rock the LSU P&G for a month.

OP makes it seems like BAMA is less qualified for beating teams that are competitive with each other. Yes, their schedule isn't the gauntlet that some would appreciate seeing, but FSU beat two top 10 teams that were ranked that high because they play in a conference that is not competitive, and clemson edged out a win over a GA team that has proved to not be as talented advertised whether that be because of injuries or misjudgment of the media

It's easy to make a case that FSU is a great team because they've put a licking on basically everyone, but you can't discredit a team that has lost less than 5 times in 3 years

Actually no sport is like that. Being defending champ carries no weight what so ever in team sports. Nor should it

You do know they just lost Duke Johnson for the season, right? They've already lost Dorsett. That's their #1 and #2 running backs...OUT.

What? A healthy UGA is probably the second best team in the sec.

So the computers have them #2. Humans like them enough to put them #1. This season.

His point is probably more that Ole Miss and A&M have losses they may not have and therefore be ranked higher if they'd played Wake Forest instead of Auburn.

To an extend.

But the fact is if Bama went unbeaten, and two other teams played for the title, they should just tell the University "We know you've been the champions for two straight years, but because the teams you played ended up not being as good as these other teams, you don't get a fair chance to defend you title. Sorry, go shutout some scrub in the Sugar Bowl."

Basically.. exactly. This seasons accomplishments on the field should be all that matter.

The computers can only do what the humans criteria says. Bama is ranked #1 because THIS YEAR's bama team is perceived as the best team. Not because a different bama team beat a different Notre dame team last year. BCS champs don't always start #1 nor should they.
