I like it. It has to be considered a bit of a homerun, even if there are some questions (recruiting connections, etc). I think just a week ago most people would have considered it far-fetched that Bielama would leave Wisconsin for Arkansas.
On a selfish note, I like smash mouth football so I'm pleased the SEC isn't going completely overboard on the spread at this point.

Are you counting (3rd place) this year?
No, I believe they won the Big 10 out right last year and i'm being nice and giving the Co-Champ award for a season before that when they tied for 1st. Some teams in the SEC (Ole Miss) like to hang banners for stuff like that.

In B1G play, Bielema went 23-1 against Minnesota, Indiana, Illinois, and Purdue and 16-18 against everybody else.

Yeah I know right, Ohio State and Michigan are no Rice or Tulane.

I think he'll fail. He's a career midwest guy ho was already known as a poor recruiter. Arkansas has to tap into Texas and Louisiana significantly to succeed and I dont think he can do it.
Additionally, he's a ground and pound coach inhereting a team bult to run Bobby Petrinos offense. Even if he's able to get the talent for his scheme up to snuff in a couple years, he'll essentially be tring to beat Bama and LSU at their own game with half the talent. Not a recipe or success.

I want to see what kind of staff he puts together. If he can get some assistants that at least have experience recruiting in Texas, LA, etc. and relationships in those states, then he can perhaps better locate and identify some of those under the radar guys. If he brings a lot of his Wisconsin staff I'd be kind of skeptical.
I also agree with the posters who have said there will be a pretty significant transition period. At least a couple years to build the type of lines you need to play that style

Exactly. Imagine what he's going to do with the classes he's currently pulling in.

He simply cannot afford to play that style in year one. They'll average less than 20 PPG if he tries to play smashmouth with that abortion of an offensive line and a new QB.

I'll be very interested to see what they run on offense in year one

the offensive line talent isn't that bad, they were just really poorly coached.

How many are returning? 4 or 5 returning starters + new and better coaching could certainly improve it quickly

4 starters I think but a lot of young guys got PT because of injury.
speaking of his assistants, he obviously has an eye for assistant coach talent- Dave Doeren was his DC and Paul Chryst his OC and he had to replace them and 4 other assts after the 2011 season and still went 8-5 this year (including 3 losses in OT- moral victories but noteworthy), not bad for so much turnover.

I think he's a pretty good coach, and but it'll be interesting to see how he adjusts to the SEC recruiting styles. Especially after his criticism of Meyer last offseason.

I think it is a rock star hire. I am not sure how successful his tenure will be but you definitely got the wow factor.

I find it interesting that most folks are generally very complimentary, other than the A&M and Ole Miss fans.

i did a cursory peek at Wisky's roster: 1 MO player, 1 from Tenn., 5 from Tx., and 10 from Fl.
he'll prolly never snag recruits away from UF, or A&M but the fact that he has at least some connections already in at least parts of those two states is helpful.
he seems like a good evaluator of under the radar type players, based on his recruiting classes. the knock (or so i've read), is his game day skills, and maturity (maybe from beat writers holding a grudge, idk).
i think this hire looks better in two years than it does now, and i don't think it looks bad right now. he'll need the personnel to do what he does, and that's gonna take time...and some patience from the fanbase.

A&M and Ole Miss know bad coaching hires when we see them by now. We've had plenty of practice in identifying them.
