Outside of Texas being ranked for the umpteenth time (I think Herman is legit but really? This year?) I think this is actually a pretty fair poll.

in 2011, UT finished effectively 28th at 8-5 So 5 lower than 23
If UT finishes 8-5, they will be close to being ranked. Will depend how the season goes

You are going back to when the big 12 was an entirely different conference, 12 teams with an equal billing to the big 10

I think part of it stems from the fact there is not a whole lot of reason to be confident based on last year's performance.
Auburn is a roller coaster, it makes it hard to have confidence. Last year was a very meh year. It is hard to think rationally that the team should be in the top 15 until we see it on the field.
All of that being said, I am very optimistic, but preseason rankings mean very little, especially in AU history.
And it is not just AU that should feel this way, honestly. LSU should be skeptical of their ranking as well.
Also, I live here in State College and think it is pretty crazy that PSU would be number 6. They likely get murdered by Ohio State this year.
I have never looked at anyone who followed up on this before, but I feel pretty confident the coaches poll is way off, esp in 10-20 by the end of the year.

Everyone points to Texas returning a bunch of starters as to why they should be ranked but TCU returns even more starters and production plus has beaten Texas by an average of 36 points the last 3 years but is unranked

No team from the modern big 12 has ever finished the season ranked by the coaches with only 8 wins
With only 1 exception ever, teams in the weak big 12 conference have always needed 10 wins minimum to finish ranked by the coaches

It's a preseason poll, so it's not that big a deal. Looking at the next few teams I'd have put Washington State above Texas but can't really think of anyone else who got particularly screwed.
