quote:I agree with all this.
Why?
Because a successful UAB helps Birmingham. A thriving Brimingham helps Alabama.
A rising tide lifts all boats.
Full disclosure, my wife was an associate prof at UAB, my dad got his Masters of Public Administration at UAB, I was a TA at UAB and I taught in Birmingham City Schools for more than a decade. UAB has a great program for Birmingham City Schools, giving scholarships to kids who pass two or more AP exams.
UAB is a boon for Birmingham and the state. If its undergraduate program continues to grow, it only helps the state.
The problem is UAB football is pure dead weight. It's working against everything you're saying, by sucking up tons of money with very very very little support.

This is as good a play as any. I'll just leave this here: LINK
UAB booster claims a letter from then athletic director Gene Bartow to the NCAA about Alabama is part of the cause here. Alleges coaches were trained under Bear Bryant to cheat. Seemingly Jr has taken it personally.

Did you read after that?

Those factors have allowed decision makers to point to the relatively low level of support for the program as a reason not to invest in UAB football. This year's surge in attendance to more than 20,000 fans per game will make that more difficult of an argument to sell. It's also worth noting that supporters cite the lack of board investment in facilities as the primary reason for the lack of fan support.

Football means tighter ties with alumni. It means increased visibility on national TV. Some believe it helps boost enrollment. Does UAB want to be the only urban school turning out the lights when other schools are turning them on?

Not really, they had plenty of support compared to a lot of programs around the country.. and don't lose as much money either.

Welcome to Politics 101.
To be honest, Bentley doesn't have to appease anyone. He just won his last election (age alone will keep him from seeking a different office in 2018) and the legislature DNGAF about anything he says. Shait isn't real until Mike Hubbard or Del Marsh weigh in. They are the real powers right now.

I did read that, and thought it was pretty funny. Surge to 20,000 . Alabama A&M blows that away.

They're like 5th in there conference in attendance, and there was a cbs article saying that 30 or so programs lost more money.

We must agree to disagree here. I can see your argument, but read that business journal article all the way through. It makes a compelling case imho.

One more link for those who want to actually talk about y'know facts and stuff.
Birmingham Business Journal

UAB's football program brought in $8,980,301 in revenue and reported $8,956,079 in expenses in 2013, according to federal Equity in Athletics Data.
Like I've told the Auburn morons in here repeatedly, this has nothing to do with the BOT wanting to get rid of football. This is all about UAB getting leeway to eliminate Title IX sports to cut the deficit they run every year.
Eliminating football doesn't hurt them at all financially, but it gives them room to kill 85 other scholarships in high-expense, zero-revenue sports.

The University of South Alabama met Texas State on the field Saturday, Nov. 15, with a lot on the line -- each team hoping to go to a bowl game.
Various school officials, including Coach Joey Jones, reached out to students earlier in the week imploring them to spend their Saturday at Ladd-Peebles Stadium, but attendance did not live up to expectations for the 6:30 p.m. game.
A crowd of 10,289 attended the game.

UAB had around 30,000 for Troy,Marshall, and A&M and averaged around 23000 for the year.

You're stupid. This has everything to do with the bot, hell it's their decision.

Are you just gonna look at a few attendance records or would you like to discuss revenue numbers and alumni donations?

Maybe Jr. has. Bartow wrote a letter more than 8 years after Bryant died saying he was the reason Bartow couldn't win anymore or recruit players. When the LA Times got the letter and made it public in 1993, he was humiliated and issued a public apology because his idiocy had been exposed to the entire country.
