Did you read after that?

quote:
Those factors have allowed decision makers to point to the relatively low level of support for the program as a reason not to invest in UAB football. This year's surge in attendance to more than 20,000 fans per game will make that more difficult of an argument to sell. It's also worth noting that supporters cite the lack of board investment in facilities as the primary reason for the lack of fan support.

Bingo. Been waiting for someone to play the "increased attendance" card. It's fool's gold...pure bullshite. The AD predicted an increase attendance for 2014 a year ago because of the opponents UAB had on the schedule...not because of any expected increase in support from UAB fans.

""Obviously, we would want more fans, and we never have had a problem meeting that 15,000 requirement by the NCAA," he said. "The reason I'm not concerned is next year we have a very good home schedule. We have Troy the first game of the year. They travel. And our third game of the year will be against Alabama A&M, and they have very good crowds that follow them. Next year bodes well for scheduling."

Alabama A&M...who somehow managed to combine with Alabama State to draw 67,000 to Legion Field this year.

Yet on Nov. 8, with an opportunity to become bowl eligible for the first time in 10 years, UAB only managed to draw only 9,457 fans for the La. Tech game...some of whom had to be visiting fans.

You're stupid. This has everything to do with the bot, hell it's their decision.
It was their decision to create and, for 30 years, subsidize a failing, dead-end, money pit program. That was the bad decision.

Ignore him. He's a moron. The UAB AD flat out said a year ago that attendance would be higher for those games this year specifically because Troy and AA&M travel so well. at an idiot who thinks that high numbers for those games is an indication of UAB fan support.

Doesn't he sit on the board? Seems like he should know what's going on.

You cannot compare the A&M/ State game. That is a rivalry that is like a mini Iron Bowl. Hell, we would find way to have a day off in Birmingham Schools the Friday before that game.

Do you dispute attendance went up? Do you think winning would increase attendance?

Are you retarded? UAB football will never have any impact on the city of Birmingham, much less the state. I bet you also believe that paying billions in tax money to build pro sports stadiums for billionaires is a good investment for the public as well.

You cannot compare the A&M/ State game.

The hell you can't. All I hear from a few UAB fans and a bunch of Auburn fans is how dangerous the area around Legion Field is and that's why they won't go to games there. 67,000 fans say that's bullshite. Pure. fricking. bullshite.

I absolutely dispute that the number of UAB fans attending games increased.

What is it about the fact that only 9,400 fans showed up to watch them try to get bowl eligible is difficult for you to comprehend?

How is that cherry picking any less than using the 20k plus numbers?

Nice insult. That is a great way to get your point across.

Others have had rational arguments one way or the other.

Jesus, do I really have to spell this out? By the UAB AD's own admission, the 20,000 for Troy and AAMU is dependent on the visitors' bringing a large crowd. You're wanting to assert that winning will bring fans...only 9,400 showing up for one of the biggest games in ten years says otherwise.

I heard today that the BOT is trying to make UAT the primary undergrad campus and have UAB be more of a grad/commuter program. Killing sports would be the first step in that process.

Dropping UAB football is part of a study commissioned by the BOT which includes in addition to athletics certain proposals to drop and/or transfer a number of UAB undergrad academic programs to UAT.

From what i have read, the UAT campus is overbuilt and looking for ways to increase enrollment to help fill those new facilities. Over half its students are now out of state, yet UAB's student population is growing with instate students.

The fox looks around for some chickens and bingo! Downgrade UAB academically and athletically, make UAB as unattractive as possible, and ship em off to Tuscaloosa.

UA is far from overbuilt. Even with the new buildings it is still busting at the seams.

All public schools have had their state funding dramatically reduced over the last decade. Dr. Witt made the decision to try and attract more out of state students, since they pay 2.5 times the money in tuition. UA dramatically increased enrollment while he was President. Now that he is the system chancellor he wants to expand UAB too. The problem is UAB loses a ton of money on athletics. That money could be used to expand the school.

Not that I care one way or the other, but as part of the University of Alabama system, isn't the decision whether to field a football team or a separate athletic department altogether an internal issue within UA?

I'm confused why others, especially Auburn fans, seem to be supporting keeping UAB football. What difference does it make to you? Auburn has a campus in Montgomery. I'm sure they're more than welcome to develop a Football Bowl Subdivision-level program there.

Why are gumps defending UAB shutting down the FB program?

I saw on another article that the BOT making the decision was made up of like 10 Gumps and 3 UAB members.

Even if they share the same BOT, thats shitty UAB has basically no representation in decision that will affect only them.

A successful UAB has little to do with football. They've never been successful, they've never not lost a shite ton of money. Their medical school is top notch and their basketball program is nice. They contribute to Birmingham, and quite well, in a number of ways. Their football program isn't, and never has been, one of them. Quite the opposite actually.

It only affects UAB? Who foots the bill when the UAB athletic department loses tens of millions of dollars every year?

Answer my first question, why do you gumps give a shite about this?

Does UAB closing the football program in some way need to be justified by gumps?

Yes obviously it affects UAB much more than it does UAT, I doubt the football program was making killer money when they started it. Most athletic departments are in the red.
