Yeah, SoG doesn't really troll. By rant standards, he's a damn saint. Though I do find it kinda funny that the yell leaders can't even be brought up without the expectation that it's a troll.

I have my moments, but mostly I'm just curious. And A&M is unique and fascinating.

It's the rant..You gotta at least throw a few jabs.

And they are a fascinating, unique bunch. I just wouldn't leave my drink unattended around them.

I'm a 2% alum. I don't know the yells, or their names, so I guess I'm just a normal SEC type fan.

I mean, every student section has their own cheers. I still know all the words to all the silly cheers we do (which aren't real unique).

Bammy Bound, Rammer Jammer, etc, although a lot of them I don't know the "name" of the cheer but I know the beat and all the words.

To be fair, it was right after an exceptionally bad Bama troll thread by a poster with an A&M logo.

Student section has awesome participation, and is extremely loud with yells. I sit in the Zone, which isn't only Alumni, so participation varies. You'll see good participation if its a big/close game with the more popular yells that everyone knows. I participate more than most, because I'm a recent graduate, and don't give a frick.

I personally think its awesome, but I completely understand why others think its stupid. Just one of the things we've done for a long time because of tradition.

That would explain why your bjs are mediocre and unenthusiastic.

Apart from games, we don't think about it.
During games, they're a big deal.

Various cheers include

They're not cheers, they're yells.
Got it?

And its not because hey we're a cult, do what the people in white say. It is because 5 people with a few hand motions can get 40k people yelling a phase in unison. The only thing that other schools do it yell 2 words back and forth just like every other school does and it all sounds the same. While effective, it leaves a little to be desired.

The way I see yells are much like the Saw-em-off thing- crappy on paper but awesome in reality.

For the yells they don't really do ANYTHING to disrupt the game. In fact we would do better just straight yelling to help our team. What they are is a chant, and the end result is this cool synchronization effect that you only see at megachurches in America.

For saw-em-off doing a whole song and motion for a mascot that doesn't exist anymore (Varsity) seems dumb, but then the visual effect of us actually sawing is awesome:

Most Aggies accept both the practical benefits as well as the stuffy traditions, as they remind us to not take it all so seriously (a tradition that many SEC program should emulate IMHO).

Do A&M folks secretly, away from rivals, kind of shake their head at it or is it a serious, deeply held tradition?

I'm not even sure what the question means. Turn it around for your cheerleaders and it won't make sense to you, either.

I was all in on those guys until I finally returned for a game and Midnight Yell Practice after 30 years away at the USC game last year. And I'll say without reservation that either those guys are all now gay, or they're doing a really good impression of gay. My wife, who has no dog in this fight, looked at me halfway through MYP and asked, "Are they all gay?"

Not even half-arse pushups, lots of weird hugging, and high fives for no reason. The whole thing was disturbing. And get off my lawn.

ETA: During games, though? They're awesome. The yells are awesome. Particularly "Beat the Hell out of [Whoever]".

Serious question...

the nut squeezing, is that for everyone or just the corp members &/or yell leaders?

Is that a common thing for every game?

True that it represents "going the extra" & "feeling the circumstances" the team is going thru?

I can honestly tell you I didn't see that a single time during my 4 years at A&M.

Just in case

Freshman go and learn about A&M and its traditions, make friends with other freshmen, hook up, do team building type stuff, go to a nightly mixer, socialize, play pool, watch movies, etc.

The biggest benefit is knowing a lot of new people when you get to CS. Your options on what to do increase greatly because you know a few dozen people with something in common makes so it makes it easier to go out, find parties, meet chicks, etc.

Incoming Freshman go to a 4 day camp and learn about A&M. (Traditions, policies, history, just about anything). Main point is to make the transition from HS to college easier.

All sorts of games/dances and mixers. Great way to meet people.

Most schools have it, ours is just longer. If you go into it wanting to have fun, you will have a lot of fun. If you are a stick in the mud, you're gunna have a bad time.

The phrase 2%er implies they give 2% effort when it comes to traditions and 'school spirit' for lack of a better phrase. If someone leaves games early, doesn't do yells, never goes to midnight yell, they will be labeled as such.
