In Houston, obviously, UH is pretty big. LSU has some presence here, but its probably about as much as Rice. Maybe less. Dallas is split up between TCU, TTU (their biggest alumni location I believe), OU, and to a lesser extent SMU as the minority. If I had to throw % on it, I would say... A&M, tu - 30% EA TTU - 5% OU, TCU, UH - 3-4 % EA LSU, Rice, SMU, BU - 2-3% EA Other: SHSU, TSU, TSU, PVA&M, UTSA, UTEP, etc <1%

i would say that lsu is on the tier with ou, tech, baylor, and probably ahead of uh. east texas more lsu representation, north texas more oklahoma representation.

overall, the state is too large and divided to apply effective percentages to it as a whole.

texas probably 1.5 to 2x better represented than a&m, big gap, then the rest. tcu and baylor have done well recently, but being small private schools that were bad for so long means that they will probably never approach a&m or texas. without looking, i couldn't tell you/don't care if tech made a bowl game last year, but i've never really spent any time in west texas.

for reference, i currently live in (and grew up near) houston.

That's probably about how I would break down percentage wise also, maybe with Tech a little higher than OU. They're close though

No, just no.

Tech is miles ahead of any you listed above. Hell, even when these Dirt Road Shitkickers drop out of Tech they still claim Tech as their team. Tech is 3rd in state and it's not by a narrow margin.

that's ok. a&m/tcu/baylor have kicked their arse in nearly every metric since realignment, other than apparel sales/revenue.

they won't be down forever, but they also aren't coming roaring back by playing in front of 50,000 fans on plastic fields in locations no one cares about, while a&m is in the sec.

I would have agreed with you 10 years ago, but not today. A&M is splitting out more alumni at a faster rate now ( a lot of catching up to do). The Johnny Football years really gave us a ton of t shirt fans. Similar to what VY did for tu. Now A&M is on CBS, ESPN, or SECN while tu is on ABC/FOX, FS1, and LHN. We're beating them in the ratings in Texas. We built the bigger stadium and fill it up better more consistently. If there is a gap, it is a very small one.

i've not spent much time in north or west texas (so i'm not going to argue the point-you may be right), but tech is almost non-existant in houston.

i would assume that tech and lsu are about the same size(?) and that lsu sends more grads to houston than any other city besides NO. BR is much closer to houston than lubbock, and i would guess that lsu sends more grads here than tech does.

Having been brought up in San Antonio, and now in Dallas, I was struck by what felt like a 50-50 fight in north Texas between Texas and OU. Kind of shocking at first to see how much OU is in Dallas, until you look at a map.

The Texas 10% rule has benefited OU, OSU and Arkansas, and to some extent LSU and Alabama. And also A&M Seems like there are lots more grads of those schools in Dallas now. Lot of Baylor fans in Dallas as well.

Aggies far and away the most popular they have ever been. If OU and UT right their ships the percentages will settle again into UT and OU with A&M at 3rd.

That's just north Texas.

graduates and ratings aside, the average highschool-diploma-or-lower person on the streets in any city in texas is still far more likley to have $100 in texas clothes and bumper stickers than a&m. it will always be this way.

i guess it depends on what type of presence/visibility the OP was referring to.

This is probably about right.
Although I'd put tu at close to 50% and lower everyone else. The only folks that are really A&M fans are those that went there or had parents/siblings/children that went there. Fortunately we have a very large student body.

tu has all the t-shirt fans and football fans at schools in the tu system (even if they have their own team). Many A&M system "kids" and UH students are also t-shirt t-sips. And there is a wide cross section of casual fans in the state that have no ties to any school that love to see us do poorly so they can laugh at us.

It is what it is.

I'm in agreement with you and actually very much ok with this. TAMU cannot be the school of choice for the masses. It has become extremely difficult to get into A&M and our academics are tough. Our graduates go on to achieve great things in life because of their work ethic, education, and determination. Our military leaders also excel in the armed services. I'm very proud of these things and could care less if we are the choice school of the "casual fan." We have a large and passionate alumni base that has allowed our university to become what it is. If that means we are stuck at 2nd or 3rd most popular in the state then so be it.

Texas 50%
A&M 30%
Tech 8%
BU 6%
TCU 6%

Aggies are only more popular in their own minds. 30% is being generous.

From a New York Times article. LINK October of 2014, so pretty relevant.

It drives Aggies absolutely crazy to see those dern tu tsip whorns with a better ranking in anything. It's a fricking popularity contest, but as with everything else, Aggies little dick syndrome rears its head AGAIN. I think you guys post threads like this to observe their delusion. Please, continue.
