I heard on Baton Rouge radio there are already 87 million viewers for sec network. It took the big 10 like 7 years to reach that. Each school is looking at 8 to 10 million in extra money because of the sec network.
and keep in mind, the B1G network was and is considered a success.

I think if Vegas REALLY wanted one, they could pull it off - there's enough money rolling through that town to pull it off (though I think something permanently indoor, like an NBA franchise, would be best).

I think the fact that they have legal sport books scares most major league teams from touching Vegas.

Austin is just weird.

Have been banned twice, after asking perfectly innocent questions about Texas draft picks. They're sure sensitive.

it has solid programming, and does a great job of giving attention to every single school. They're even doing stuff on Maryland and Rutgers now. SECN could take a few leaves out of their programming book IMO.

This would be a good time to mention that Ole Miss annihilated them on their own field.

Or a good time to mention they didn't have their starting QB and they destroyed Ole Miss the year before in Oxford.

It's not all that weird anymore.

The reasons Austin doesn't have professional franchises are:

1) It has done most of its growth in the last 30 years. It used to be a college *town* even as recent as back in the early 80's.
2) Like San Antonio, it falls under the umbrella of Cowboy-ism and Rangers and Astros fandom. The other existing Texas sports franchises count it as part of their territory and don't want that to change.
3) It's smaller than San Antonio, which also doesn't have NFL or pro baseball franchises and would get them first
4) The Longhorns ARE the pro teams here, so there's not much outcry or need to lure an officially professional team
5) Everyone here is a transplant. They're still fans of whatever teams they have back where they moved here from

A question for the Aggies about the LHN......why did they think a channel that focuses on only one team would be viable? Are they that arrogant or was there some sort of business plan that made it seem like a good idea?

In fairness, ESPN gave them a boatload of money because they thought it was a good idea too.

ETA: or maybe that's what you meant. For the life of me I don't know. Perhaps it could have/still can work if they actually get some important things like, I don't know, stuff people would actually want to watch.

That guy threw for 4TDs and helped Texas score 66 points on Ole Miss the year he played.

It just seemed a little bit too narrow a focus to work on a large scale. I realize they have a big fanbase, but didn't think that it was big enough to make it work.

I'm convinced that ESPN saw it as an expense to keep Fox marooned in the Pacific time-zone. ESPN did not want UT leading a charge of Big 12 teams to the PAC, which has a Fox contract. I don't think ESPN thought they'd really make money on it. A loss-leader of sorts, if you will.

The Longhorns though really DID think people would demand it and watch it and that it would make money. They convinced themselves that Texas is full of die-hard Horn fans when it really just has a bunch of sidewalkers who wear their gear when they are good. They also thought that the Texan diaspora is widespread, large, and fervent enough to tune-in from all over America just to see "their" Horns. It was pure arrogance on their part.
