Sheffield and Hudson have been just as good as Schmidt

That's debatable, let's look at the stats:

LINK

Wins
Clarke - 6-0
Sheffield - 3-1
Hudson - 3-1

Innings Pitched
Clarke - 42
Hudson - 39.2
Sheffield - 30.2

ERA
Sheffield - .88
Hudson - 1.13
Clarke - 1.29

Hits Allowed
Sheffield - 24
Hudson - 28
Clarke - 31

Opp. Batting Avg
Hudson - .196
Clarke - .205
Sheffield - .207

Walks Allowed
Clarke - 6
Sheffield - 12
Hudson - 18

Strikeouts
Clarke - 51
Sheffield - 45
Hudson - 45

Stuckout Looking
Clarke - 19
Sheffield - 15
Hudson - 12

HBP
Sheffield - 1
Clarke - 3
Hudson - 4

Balk
Hudson - 1
Clarke and Sheffield - 0

Sure, there pretty close in several categories, but Sheffield needs to play another game to catch up in the innings count, which would help to give a more accurate comparison. I think Schmidt has clearly outperformed Hudson though.

Tough to compare them this early. Schmidt gave up 4 er last week vs Arkansas and Hudson hasn't done that all year (Florida Atlantic, Umass Lowell, ucla, Oregon, vandy, and Georgia... 3 of these are currently ranked and 4 have been ranked this year).

Hudson vs vandy...

9.0 ip 4 h 1 r 0 er 2 bb 8 k

That's the most impressive line by any of the pitchers mentioned so far.

Hudson's last 4 starts (ucla, Oregon, vandy, and Georgia)...

28.2 ip 21 h 3 er 28 k

That's 0.96 era over last 4 starts

4. About Schmidt: Gamecock ace keeps rolling

SouthCarolina90X90Coming off a big series sweep of Arkansas, No. 14 South Carolina faced its biggest test yet, hitting the road to face No. 9 Ole Miss. In a matchup between two of college baseball’s hottest teams, the Gamecocks took the first game of the series 5-1 behind another strong performance from ace Clarke Schmidt, who limited the Rebels to one run while striking out eight over 6.2 innings. Two weeks into the SEC schedule, it seems apparent that Schmidt is one of the league’s top Friday starters; he is now 6-0, 1.29 on the season with 51 strikeouts and six walks in 42 innings. Phew.

Gene Cone, who was a nice sparkplug for the Gamecocks last weekend against the Hogs, had three more hits out of the leadoff spot to pace South Carolina’s 13-hit attack. And the unstoppable John Jones went 2-for-3 with two walks. He’s now hitting .430/.529/.698, and SEC pitching hasn’t slowed him down in the least after four games.

Hudson and Schmidt are both top 5 era right now. Hudson 4 and Schmidt 5. Schmidt does have twice the wins of everyone in the top five however.

Wins are a terrible way to evaluate pitchers. FWIW, I'm not knocking Schmidt... He's a great pitcher.

We're gonna bounce back tonight and put up a crooked number early in the game.

We had 11 hits last night ... Just couldn't string together a big inning... I credit Carolina's defense for that... Didn't give us anything.

To that point, SC did have more hits and I think more LOB than OM did. Both teams had plenty more opportunities to score.

Great AB by Cullen there ... Don'tknow why you don't throw the slider away up 1-2 in the count but hindsight is 20/20

We look like hot water garbage this series. Cocks exposing our rotation thus far. And our lineup for that matter.

Carolina pitcher is on fire, and very very good....and unhittable when the umpire gives him called strikes when the ball is 10 inches low and 10 inches outside. that is all I will say about that...the young man is dealing, no doubt about that.
