quote:Their college performance obviously weighed heavily into where they got drafted...
Then why include their draft round?

You do realize that picture is Willie Roaf going up against defensive end Eric Curry. Curry was the 6th pick taken in the NFL draft. Dig up the tape. He spent the vast majority of the game on his back. Roaf straight up battered him. Joe Peace was quoted as saying if he had a lick sense, he would have ran off tackle behind Roaf every single play.
La Tech had 27 rushes for -8 yards...if you take away the 3 sacks, they had 24 rushes for 10 yards...they weren't gonna run on Bama that game no matter who they ran behind. You stated that Roaf dominated the Bama D...he may have had a good game one-on-one against Curry, but Bama's D-line controlled the line of scrimmage the entire game...

I wouldn't put the 2011 LSU Dline anywhere near the 5 best of all time, but it's vastly underrated by many people, including LSU fans. That line was very deep and very talented, and it masked a lack of LB talent on that team. It just gets overshadowed by the secondary.
The starting front four included two 1st round picks and two 3rd round picks. The next six in the rotation included two draft picks. Overall, seven of the top ten from the rotation are still playing in the NFL.
* - Denotes that player is still on a roster.
DE - Barkevious Mingo (1st)*
DT - Michael Brockers (1st)*
DT - Bennie Logan (3rd)*
DE - Sam Montgomery (3rd)
DT - Ego Ferguson (2nd)*
DE - Lavar Edwards (5th)*
DT - Anthony Johnson (UDFA)*
DE - Jamauria Rasco (UDFA)*
DE - Kendrick Adams
DT - Josh Downs

College FB history is a pretty long time period to look at, you'll mostly get answers from the last two decades.
For example, I was recently watching an Arkansas vs Texas game from the mid 70's and both teams had ferocious D-lines with a couple of guys who went on to have pro bowl careers in the NFL.
If they were playing today we'd all be listing them as potential top 5 or 10 lines in college history. As is I doubt it would cross anyone's mind to even think about those teams.

Didn't the 86 Bama team have Woodrow Lowe, Cornelius Bennet, and Derrick Thomas on the line (though Thomas was a freshman at the time)?
Played in the early, mid 1970's.

I think about them every time football season comes around. At a time when only a few games were televised, the Broyles vs. Royal game was always one of the marquis match-ups. If you were a college football fan in those days, that was one of the games you scheduled your life around.

The scary thing was, as good as those defenses were Bear Bryant usually had a better one lurking at Alabama. The mid to late 70's Bama teams were just terrifying on defense.

The key to Arkansas' Defense in the early 80's was Don Lindsey. He was a great DC and when he put Burns as the Robber and moved Billy Ray to DE it became a attack you until you submit defense.

Between 2011 and 2003 LSU, from what people have said 03 had the better D line while 11 had the better secondary. Who had the better linebackers?
2011 once Chief let Minter play over Welter.

Yes indeed. And the late, great Marquise Hill planted White early in the contest and advised, "Hello Mr. Heisman. We'll be back." All four starting linemen made it to the NFL. Injuries ended Lavalais' career and of course, there was the tragic end of Hill. Spears had a nice 10-year career and Williams is still playing at Pro-Bowl calibre. I'd have to say that was the best D-line in LSU history, followed by 2011 and 1982.
