He's always said that he likes having a LB come up close to the line. Our biggest problem last year as you obviously know is we didn't have a true nose. We were basically forced to bring another man up to support the run. When Big J hits the scene hard though this fall, it'll give us a little more options in the second level and I think we'll see more of a "true" 3-4 alignment.

We have arguably the best AD in the Nation, but I wouldn't expect an MSU fan to know that.

So true. Foley makes so many terrible decisions, what a bad AD.

Muschamp has accomplished the same as Mullen as a HC, exactly nothing to date.

Has Muschamp won two straight Egg Bowls? I don't think so.

Yes I think you're absolutely right. And I am happy to hear that geathers is doing well so now we have 2 viable options. I think getting big John was probably bigger than getting Crowell. That's my opinions of course, but idk bout you but I have missed the junkyard dawg defense of the early 2000s
Posted on 4/4/11 at 1:12 pm to Damn Good Dawg
I miss that terribly. I taped every game from 02 through about 07 before I got tired of it, and every now and then I'll pop in a tape from the early Richt years. It is astounding how much different we looked back then. Fast, phsyical, just plain mean. Getting to the ball with bad intentions and having about 8 guys there at the same time. It helped we had dudes like Odell, Blue, Davis, Boss, etc but we just had that attitude about us like "you're not gonna move the ball on us. Period."
We haven't seen that in about 6 years.

I am assuming this is a joke? Mullen has taken which is assumed, by this board and others to be the hardest job in the SEC, in the worst city, and worst campus, comprised by shitty Croom recruiting and went 9-4 in his second season on the job.
Muschamp, with a top 5 recruting class every year produced the 49th scoring defense in Div 1 last year.
You are right, they have accomplished the same thing.

Nope. He also hasn't won a division title and hasn't made an appearance in the SECCG which is the bench mark for UF coaches. You have to make it to Atlanta consistently to be considered a great UF coach. Hopefully Muschamp can get us there a few times.
Posted on 4/4/11 at 1:15 pm to msu202020
Yup. No division titles and no SEC Championships or SECCG appearances. Kudos on your 9-4 season though.

Oh wow you have them all recorded? I may have to beg you for a copy one of these days. Anyway, I remember watching those teams and offense never seemed to be our forte and our defense was the unit that would win it for us. Last couple years those roles reversed and I'll be the first to say I'd rather get back to defense. Yea, it's dumb to say that cause who wouldn't trade now for the early 2000s but I mean the way we played and all you said I just miss winning because we were tougher. Not because we are faster, flashier, or have the better qb but because you weren't getting past our front 7.

Thanks, but to compare State's goals to Florida's goals is a little unrealistic, don't you think?
People always want things both ways. State is such a difficult place to win, but yet Mullen goes 9-4 in only his second season at State.
So which is it, I am confused as to how the school with the least resources in the conference can go 9-4, and the head coach at that school in his second season not have accomplished anything?

Don't you guys expect more this coming year after the 9-4 season? Most State fans on here talk like they do.

Of course we do, but any State fan that say's they have been dissapointed with last year's 9-4 season is crazy.
The problem we have in the SEC, at least for State is that we are not pulling in Top 10 classes. Until we start doing that, it will be blind luck for us to finish any higher than a 9-4 to 10-2 record.
Posted on 4/4/11 at 1:39 pm to msu202020
You can win the West at 10-2 though. It's not impossible for State to have top 25-20 classes. Hell, there was a ton of talent in state this year in Mississippi.

10-2 will not win the West next year. I agree we can pull in top 25 classes. Mullen still has some learning to do on the recruiting trail. He is a sharp coach, he will figure it out.
Right now, he is squeezing everything he can out of what is avaliable, in the end, can you really ask more out of a coach?

We hope for more but anyone who has been a state fan for a long time would never EXPECT better than 9-4. Right now the goal is consistency.
