I guess we'll see who's right in a few years if we do actually hire him

I personally think it's close to a homerun if he hires a good staff. I'm usually too optimistic about basketball though.

Alabama board which is dead anyway. Funny how you big Grant sunshine pumpers have moved on to the next losing coach to mindlessly defend

Definitely a home run and will be portrayed as such by the National media... That'll be the first piece of the puzzle. Instant buzz and legitimacy to a program struggling to find a presence.

If I'm lumped in with a Grant lover, you haven't paid attention to my posts these past few years

I'll post this again for your consideration... I'll assume you just didn't see it the first time...

You've developed a fantasy of your own based on your personal biases.

You just compared this potential hire to Mike Shula. Think about that.

What would you have said if Tennessee had hired John Gruden a couple years ago? I would have shite my pants. That's the kind of hire we're talking about. Someone who experienced success at the professional level, was fired, did analysis for a couple of years and then got back into coaching at the college level with no experience recruiting.

It's not like he's having to learn how to be a coach. You're making yourself sound silly.

Coaching hires are always a gamble. I thought Grant was a home run hire. On a coaching staff that won a natl champ @ florida. VCU beat Duke. 2 First Round draft picks @ VCU. 75% win percentage, etc.

Compared to that what has Michael White done? Went to the NIT? 71% is fantastic.

How about Archie Miller? 65% winning percentage. 1 elite 8.

Liking/hating Grant has nothing to do with this hire. There are goods and bads with AJ. He is extremely enthusiastic. High energy. Well liked. Has had success at the highest level of basketball. Has in roads to some cities that produce great basketball talent. But, he has never recruited and has never ran a college program. Battle is betting that his goods outweigh the bads. I think they do.

Of the 7 ex-NBA coaches on the college ranks this year, 5 made the tournament. 4 made the Sweet Sixteen.

It is rumored we are strongly suggesting he keep Pettway and bring back Phillip Pearson to ease the recruiting transition.

Whether you like it or think it's dumb, this is happening. Personally, I'm torn. I can see huge upside with this hire. Or I can see us treading water. This is a boom or bust type hire.

It's obvious we contacted Miller and he turned us down. You don't jump from Marshall to Prohm/White otherwise. With those two you know what you are getting: just as much risk, probably not as much reward. It's a gamble but it's a gamble with a big payoff.

Who are the 4? I can name Cal and Petino, but both of them had found success in college before going to the NBA

If it happens, it will make basketball even more interesting in the state of Alabama. It might even be more interesting than football to me. I wouldn't mind seeing UAB, Auburn and Alabama duking it out on the basketball court.

Three of those were college coaches before that had made the Final Four before going to the NBA. I have no idea what Utah coach history was. To compare AJ with Kruger, Pitinio, or Cal is disingenuous at best.

Larry Brown was the 5th one to make the Dance. Point taken about Cal and Petino's college experience but counter point: Avery was at least pretty successful at the next level. None of the others did squat in the NBA.

He's verbally agreed to be the next HC. Contract is now being worked out.

Congratulations Bama! I hope he works out, and good luck!
