Reasonable candidates off the top of my head: Archie Miller(if we offer a Marshall type deal), Michael White, Bobby Hurley, TR Dunn(if we want to go NBA) etc.
There are tons of talented coaches out there. Hold a nationwide search were we bring in candidates and interview them.
Avery Johnson will be in over his head trying to recruit 16-18 year old kids against established college coaches who know how to talk the right game. Bill Battle has been an outright disaster

Have you ever heard Avery Johnson speak? Do you honestly believe he won't be able to recruit? He may not be able to coach a lick in college - we'll find out. But recruiting isn't going to be something he will struggle with. He can walk into a kid's house and put him on the phone with NBA GM'S, show them his rings, and list his accomplishments as a player and coach in the NBA, and they'll ask him when they can sign.

Its a realistic view. We need someone who can actually coach and develop players, not just a flashy name who was a great athlete himself at one point. How many great athletes have become great coaches?

You say realistic, I say pessimistic. I'm not sure how AJ will be at Xs and Os but I feel pretty confident he will be able to recuit well at Alabama. He's a very charismatic person with a strong resume and good ties to hotbed areas. At the worst, I feel he will increase our talent level to the point where if and when he leaves we will be a more attractive job.

Based off what? Your gut feeling?
There is hard evidence Miller can recruit and develop players, there was hard evidence Marshall could do it. There is at least a little evidence the other coaches I named can.
There is ZERO evidence Avery Johnson can. Your confidence is based off of a guess...and you think I am the unrealistic one.
This will be another Mike Shula where a coach with a name will have to learn on the job in what now is a brutal conference.
Battle should have hired Howland FROM THE START but he is incompetent.

You just compared this potential hire to Mike Shula. Think about that.
What would you have said if Tennessee had hired John Gruden a couple years ago? I would have shite my pants. That's the kind of hire we're talking about. Someone who experienced success at the professional level, was fired, did analysis for a couple of years and then got back into coaching at the college level with no experience recruiting.
It's not like he's having to learn how to be a coach. You're making yourself sound silly.

Are you really comparing AJ to Isiah Thomas? The Isiah Thomas who didn't have the best personality. Never won over .585 in NBA. Never won Coach of the Year. Had a drug overdose on lunesta and then told everyone that it wasn't him that went to the hospital but instead his 17 yr old daughter? The Isiah Thomas who was sued due to sexual harrassment? The leader of the Detroit Pistons "Bad Boys"? The Isiah Thomas who created a controversy @ NBA All star game because they wouldn't pass the ball to Jordan because he was receiving too much attn?
Yea, please let's compare the too about why Isiah failed and how NBA experience doesn't help Bama because it didn't with Isiah.
