I guess when bammer goes to some form of uptempo after TCU visits this week it will be never be called on them.

no real valid objections to this rule, just whining from coaches who dont want to see an illegal advantage go away. will help the officials by making it easier to identify, will make the game more fair by eliminating an area of the rules that is often intentionally abused, and will get offensive linemen used to what they will have to abide by in the pros (where scoring is just fine)

Malzahn is already pissed off that the NCAA won't let his receivers get a ten yards running start, like in Arena football. This rule was his breaking point.

I hope Malzahn is under observation . Would hate for him to hurt himself over a little rule change.

an offensive linemen doesn't need to be 3 yards down field on a pass play.

It's a good change.

Why? All I see it doing is being confusing on read option plays. If a interior OL doesn't have someone in front of him he should be allowed to move up field and lay a block on an LB, regardless of the play.

I wonder if we will see more DL's lining up off the LOS. There is no longer the threat of the OL getting extra push or just blocking them further downfield, not sure what is going to keep a 300 pound nose guard from getting a running start and demolishing lines. Better yet, how are you going to keep teams from just not using interior DL's? Just leave the middle open and overload the ends. Not like the guards and center are free to do anything other than stand there if there isn't someone to block, no longer have to worry about your LB's getting blocked.

Speed and passing plays aren't killing football, if anything its these dumb arse rules and the old fricks who can't change. You adapt or you die. Football should be about being physically and schematically superior, not adjusting the rules to benefit the people who insist on resisting change. Keep making changes to keep the game from progressing, then watch it end up in the same shoes as boxing or Major League Baseball.

Malzahn said. "You’re always looking for ways to be creative, and I don’t think you should ever change the rules to take creativity out of the game unless it’s a safety issue. This is not a safety issue

Well, sounds like he will have to get more fricking creative.

Is that a serious question? Regardless, it's the same principle - stretching a rule as far as you can for a competitive advantage.

So the pros are holding them selves back by using the one yard rule. Amirite?

Sounds like a bunch of scared coaches to me. Last year it was trying to get the 10 second rule. They are trying anything they can to slow the Bus down.

You sure are concerned about it Herman. I hope Malzahn's offensive strategy makes you even more uncomfortable and combative in the future.

I would attribute a lot of the recent success of CFB to the evolving style. There have to be things to differentiate it from the NFL to give it something as a product. Otherwise you're just watching the same thing with inferior talent.

Your lack of education is staggering. Punctuation, if you actually went to college at UA you would have learned it.

It seemed to me the primary complaint was the old rule not getting called --- I guess now if they are past three yards they will get called if the rule passes.

It is not that big of a deal. Good coaches adapt, Saban has and Malzahn will as well.

Interesting that many here claim Gus is the one whining when clearly it was the other coaches whining that got the rule change to the table. Malzahn is not trying to change a rule, others are. This does remind me of others complaining because Saban was making recruiting too tough for other coaches.
