Will we ever see a running back take over the game like they did in the past?

This is somewhat SEC related, somewhat not...

Watching the 30 for 30 on Marcus Dupree... and it made me wonder...

Will there every be another Bo Jackson, Marcus Dupree, Herschel Walker, Barry Sanders, etc?

It seems the days of one athlete being so good at running back they can control the game like a QB can are over... Now we have Tim Tebows, Cam Newtons, Johnny Manziels, etc... Obviously there are great RBs, but they now seem to be part of a group of great RBs.

ETA : Great Video of the three greats... music sucks though.. LINK

THIS. Very underrated, he rushed for 138 against LSUs defense during a LOSS plus he got limited carries.

I think the game goes in cycles. Defenses were bulking up to stop pro style offenses and a stud RB. Then the speed of the spread game started running circles around them. I think you will see defenses start slimming down a little to be more speedy then the offense will head back to the power back and you will see them take over the game again.

I could believe this... makes sense.

Well without a passing game or good coaching, you'll need it.

Well, I'm just saying he just got through taking over a game just last week

Like another poster said, it's more about the cyclical nature of the game, though. Look at the Cowboys' success the first half of the season running the ball. Some of that is due to the fact that defenses are much more keyed into mitigating pass yards since teams have been pass-heavy the past few years. The run game is an effective change-up.

If running the football becomes more the norm again, then we'll have similar threads asking if, say, the SEC offensive yards record will ever be touched by a QB again.

We are definitely exiting the era of the running back it seems. They are a dime a dozen these days.

No. Marcus Lattimore took over plenty of games during his time at USC. Some of the standouts that I can remember were against Georgia '10, Florida '10, and Navy '11 or '12.

And do you not remember y'all's '09 game against us where Mark Ingram literally ran over us, when he got in the wildcat?

Those were single game performances, and in the case of Ingram it was just one drive out of a special formation.

Don't get me wrong, I love Ingram and Lattimore was great... but they were no Bo, Herschel, Dupree, etc.

You have to remember, these guys were freaks of nature for their time.. They were in the 220+ 6'2 range and ran like track stars...

The Fridge at the time was one of the biggest D-Lineman in the pros at 6'2 335 pounds.

Bo Jackson was 6'1, 230, and ran a 4.12.

Herschel Walker 6'1, 225, and ran a a 4.2 (I think)

Marcus Dupree 6'2, 230, and ran a 4.3

Some guy for Wisconsin ran for over 400 yards last week. Seems he took over that game.

That game =/= the game. The game means the game as a whole, as in someone who defines and changes things. Just cause some NBA player scores 60 in a game doesn't make him Jordan, Johnson, or Bird.

Y'all should really watch the video I added in the OP. You'll see how these guys were Giants among men.
