Let's do this. I am beginning to explore branching out past my routine LG with 5 creams from McDonald's every morning.
I maintain that McDonald's sells some of the best coffee in the United States. I will say that Starbucks is also pretty good but what really puts them ahead is the top on their cups. This particular top somehow allows for maximum smooth drinking through the little hole. It flows almost effortlessly. Meanwhile, McDonald's might have the most ratchet coffee cup top known to existence. I really think it's keeping them from hitting that next level. I hope they read this.
Anyhow... I've had limited experience with a french press but I've been told that it's the optimal way to experience java.
Coffee snobs, teach me your ways.

I do the French press on the weekends. My wife doesn't like it as it is not filtered so there is a lot of oil in the coffee. Imagine an oil slick on the top of your coffee. Doesn't bother me.
We also have one of these, and it is awesome. It works like a French press, but has a filter so it removes a lot of the oil. Only downside is it only makes 1 cup at a time, or two really small cups.

1. Coarse ground coffee. Your typical grind is too fine and will be sour/bitter. Also very hard to press.
2. Google ratios, I can't remember them exactly.
3. Boiling hot water and let sit for four minutes and then press.
Starbucks will grind their beans for a french press if you're unsure if doing it yourself. It does yield a more flavorful cup of coffee and you can even taste the difference in where a bean was grown. Latin America tastes like nuts and is medium acidic. African coffees are very acidic in taste. Asian coffee is very "earthy" which is to say it kind of tastes like dirt, but in a good way.

Why in bloody hell would you remove the natural oils?
That's like buying a fine steak and not salting it.

This is very cool. Like I said, I don't have a lot of experience. I remember the first cup of FP coffee I ever had was very intense. It was almost too much of all things coffee but that's actually what I'm wanting to explore now.

I drink coffee maybe once or twice a year. Never liked it, no idea why.

I spent probably the first 27 years of my life hating is as well and then one day I grew up and I needed it daily.

I actually had some the other day and it really energized me, but I felt horrible later on. I think I could grow to like it, but I'll have to give it more time.
What's a good coffee to start off with so I don't feel like dying after I drink it?

It's a but of an acquired taste and you don't want anything too intense to start with. Then build up.
I just got used to doing espresso shots on a shift and all coffee now basically tastes like water to me.

I make a trip to Guatemala once a year and bring back enough coffee to last the year. It's grown at a high altitude with a less acidic soil which makes it pretty smooth to drink. It's pretty distinct. Plus I'm always buying from the same roaster which I'm sure is distinct as well.
Bought some Kona coffee while I was in Hawaii this summer and it had some similarities (similar climate and soil, I'd guess). Got some Peaberry coffee there which is really, really smooth. But may just be because they select the beans pretty carefully.

Starbucks has some good coffee. Their normal medium roast is garbage.

Usually the lighter the roast, the more caffiene and acidity.
I just get two straight shots of expresso every a.m.. Much cheaper than an actual cappuccino and is so strong / overpowering. LOVE IT

I'm not sure. All of our body chemistry is different. I think McDonald's is a good, cheap cup of coffee. I just like mine with some half-and-half. LG coffee with 5 creams. MD coffee with 3 creams. SM coffee with 1 cream. That's just me though. I can't speak to why it made you feel like shite.
