Above is the ESPN article that has been posted here I'm sure. This board is filled with lots of recent grads, current students, and even some olds.

From the Oklahoma side:

quote:

"We have to solve this because we are talking about the season ticket-holders of tomorrow," said Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione. "But interests and attitudes are changing so rapidly it's not easy to quickly identify what we need to do."

My biggest fear is that they are missing the boat. This isn't about getting the student section back... it's about getting the young graduate to not miss a generation of shitting nosebleeds to HDTV.

That's the biggest problem, IMO. Not students, but recent students. Fortunately my suspicions are that a lot of the solutions for both could be solved.

I present my first piece of evidence:

Tailgate guys

These guys are making a killing, that the athletic department could be making. I suggest you package awesome tailgate packages, with a full assortment of options, with shitty nosebleeds.

Built in electric outlets, wifi, HDTVS, etc. Every amenity you could imagine, for a competitive price, in prime locations. Otherwise you'll see a generation of people stay at home. College football is an all-day event for people now. It starts with College Gameday, and ends with the bars. If the Athletic Departments don't move now, you're going to lose a generation. I don't see any other way.

Kyle Field is putting on a massive renovation, but with no announcements for renovating the park right next to it. It seems incredibly foolish to me.

Any ideas Rant? I would especially like input from new/recent season ticket holders in the entry level price range, just to see what your bottom line is for a Saturday at your favorite SEC-venue.

It's annoying that I either have to stop drinking for the game, sneak in shitty liquor, or chug before walking in.

The later two contribute to more halftime exits/issues than playing a directional school.

I think the problem is larger than alcohol. Many people (of all ages but more in the 18-25 range) seem to have an attention span that lasts about a quarter of football. I believe that technological advances over the past decade have created a world where instant gratification and/or realization are the norm (Facebook, Twitter, etc.), which in turn makes sitting through a game that lasts 3 hours difficult. I am not a psychiatrist, but that's my take.

Your take is correct. That's a very large portion of it.

As far as I know, Auburn has zero problem w students packing their section and staying four quarters so I have nothing to contribute

This is such an easy problem to solve. Take away % of student attendance and give it to young alumni that have graduated in the last 5 years. Same level of fandom, same level of drunkness, will actually show up with cash in our pockets.

Never heard of Tailgate Guys until now. Really cool idea. I get what you're saying, because it will draw people to the campus/tailgate scene more, but I'm not sure a young grad will pay that kind of money when they can just buy beer and stay home.

screw the students ... i'm a graduate, but if the students want to stay home and get drunk, then let 'em ... there are plenty of folks on the list who want tickets ... reduce the student section by half ...

The same people have very little issue watching a game on TV. You're channeling your inner Marty's FIL on that one. I would argue that young adult fans are still much more willing to go, it's the suburban warriors who are leaving the Tahoe parked on Saturdays.

Cheap, massive HDTV's have done more damage to attendance that twitter ever will. Physically going to campus, parking, and enduring an all day party standing in line to piss is no longer required. Have a house party, piss in your own toilet, pass out drunk in your own bed 10 mins after the last whistle...

The answer is two fold... make the basics a little easier to get to, and allow those who really want to attend the game an honest shot at buying tickets. Parking needs an overhaul, and as I said earlier just having beer would go a long way. Secondly LSU's issue, and I'm guessing many SEC schools' too, is that tickets are locked up in red tape and in the hands of people who aren't really wild about going unless it's a top 10 matchup. I agree with the OP that if young adults like me feel like it's such a hassle to get tickets, we're more likely to spend our tax return on a huge tv rather than TAF fees.

This. You're there to watch football, Not text/tweet someone who's probably 5 rows away from you.

Selling beer at all games would help a lot. But I think the main reason attendance is down everywhere is due to what you miss when you go to a game.

If it is not a marquee game, why put up with all the hassle & expense for a so-so game and miss a slew of great tv games that day. When you go to a game, you basically are shutting yourself out from what is going on everywhere else in the College Football world that day. And most of us are college football fans, not just a fan of our school.

If these stadiums can somehow make you feel like you are in your den and give you more live action of other games going on it would help. It's almost as-if there needs to be a jumbotron in each stadium designated to showing other big games going on during yours.

Plus, if you stay home and watch your team on TV, due to the excellent TV coverage, analysis, camera shots, interviews, you know way more about what went on during a game than if you actually attended it. It's the reason why most of the time after going to a game, I go back and watch it when I get back home, to find out more.

I'd be all for installing cell phone jammers in stadiums.

I can't stand to go to a game with somebody and they spend the whole damn game on their phone.

These people are pathetic, missing out on life because they're too busy trying to look cool on facebook and twitter.
