Shaw brought up that there were four targeting calls last Saturday in the SEC. Here's how he described them: "Two were absolute textbook targeting. One was in the gray area, but clearly by rule it was a targeting foul. And then we had one was properly overturned."The overturn was Wilson's hit in the fourth quarter, which was ruled a legal hit on replay, but the penalty remained, giving Vanderbilt new life on a critical drive. The targeting call that was "in the gray area" was almost certainly Ray Drew's hit on Vanderbilt quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels in the second quarter. Drew appeared to only shove the quarterback on the shoulders, but the targeting call, made by referee Matt Moore, was upheld on replay review. Drew was ejected.Read more here: https://www.ledger-enquirer.com/2013/10/23/2758789/secs-shaw-speaks-extensively-on.html#storylink=rss#storylink=cpy

Soo,being right 50% of the time and helping determine the outcome of a contest is what's best for the conference? What was grey about the Drew push? Why am I arguing with myself?

Let's just do flag football before someone gets hurt.

Shaw is lying his arse off about his officials not getting the go to call more targets. Everybody saw the Drew call, and everyone not in the replay booth was sure it wasn't a target.

Well of course they're not going to admit the rule sucks. That would be an admission of guilt. Nobody has the nuts to admit when they're wrong anymore.

I don't want to blame officiating on the outcome of this game but after a half liter of non smooth canadian whiskey,i'm gonna blame officiating. The lunacy in it all is the fact that the 15 yrd/penalty/automatic first after the player is found to not have NOT committed a foul was concocted by coaches on the rules committee.

Seriously I will be somewhat pleased if they fix it but how did they think it was a good idea in the first place.

I hate how this rule is working out, not merely because of the ejections, but because of the conversation and timidity on the part of the DBs for every play across the middle.

Hate to say it, fellas, but things like this don't usually get better. The sport will be a good bit different by the time we're all old and gray.

1,000,000 dollar question? Must of had an open bar the day they pulled off that little bit of brilliance?

The sad thing is that you or I could easily tell the difference between a clean hit, a personal foul and a dirty "targeting" type hit. However, as you said and based on what I saw these guys are going to play fast and loose with this and not let common sense get in the way. It is going to get worse and give officials game changing authority.

Damn shame....

The officials are told to throw the flag when in doubt. Stupid because we saw how it could change a game last week.

Story I see on SECR says the opposite.... SEC will be recommending the rule be changed.

I don't have a problem with how the targeting rule is applied right now. The problem I have is with the penalty yards sticking after the penalty is overturned. Needs to be changed.

I think that will inevitably change. I feel like there's no one who thinks that makes sense.

After the usual Sunday call between Richt and Shaw it seems that Shaw agrees these were 2 bad calls and something will be done about it.
Too late for Georgia but the SEC officials will be on notice to be more careful about calling this.

Being more careful is against the rule which says that if it is a question, call it. They need to just change the damned thing after the season.
