LSU's D-Line and LB's will be better, secondary will be weaker in 2012

LSU will have a stronger front seven in 2012, even though they lost Brockers and Adams, they have All-American lineman stacked up like cord wood. They will be even more dominating and deeper up front.
They lost two LBs who were undersized and also relatively slow. We didn't find out until the NFL combine that Alabama's bigger LBs were also faster than LSU's. The new guys will be inexperienced but will be a huge upgrade in both talent and speed. These guys will be able to cover the wheel route even if it is Knile Davis.
LSU lost 4 of its top 6 DBs.(Claiborne, Taylor, Brooks and Mathieu) They still have the best safety in the country in Eric Reid. That guy is a baller and he brings the wood. Taylor was a solid safety and there is likely to be little drop-off in Loston. Claiborne was the best CB in America. He was as good of a cover corner as PP7, and LSU had the best DB in CFB for two straight years. Simon is solid, but he is no Claiborne. No team will fear throwing at him and there will be a significant drop-off. Brooks was probably the best third corner in America last year, and would have started for all but a few teams( ran a 4.3 forty at the combine). His replacement will not be as good as Ron Brooks was.
The Honeybadger was not a shut down cover corner, but he was a sure tackler and a disruptive force on the edge blitz and stripping the ball. There will be a significant drop-off at CB and also as a returner.
The question becomes can the front 7 make up for the weaker (comparatively) secondary this year? Can Mingo and Montgomery apply enough pressure that even freshmen CBs can be successful?
Make no mistake that LSU will have an outstanding secondary this season, but it will not be as good as last year's.

Fairly good analysis. The good news for LSU is the Tigers have a few easier opponents to work out the kinks prior to SEC play (at Auburn).
I fully expect the d-line to wreak havoc, as you astutely pointed out, so that will take some pressure off the CBs.

Not a bad write up. it's Eric not Greg Reid though. Greg Reid was diss missed from FSU.
While I agree our secondary will be weaker, it won't be by much. We've been spoiled in the secondary the last decade, and it doesn't appear to be slowing down. There will be a few growing pains will Our young DB's, but how much or little has yet to be seen. I think after the Washington game we will have a better idea. Price is pretty good and has a good core with Soph Kasen Williams and crew.

They still have the best safety in the country in Greg Reid.

If LSU acquired Greg Reid, then the TM7 loss would be forgotten. That would be scary. Stay away from LSU, Greg Reid.
Where is Greg Reid playing this year? Small school, or is he playing at all?

Performance determines 'what is better'.
This is defined in relative terms as each season and participants are different.
Further, the difference in competition may hide in the statistics and show this years units as 'better'.
I'd feel better if we got all of the 'Best of lists' and offseason willies out of our system.

On the point about teams not fearing throwing Tharold Simon's way, we'll have to wait and see. In other words, Max is skeptical of that claim (as am I).
