I'm just confused why the media & Bama fans talk as though we r the only ones that "lost" players. (we lost TM7, so let's re-vote the rankings). If I remember correctly, didn't Bama "lose" 5 guys in the first round of the NFL Draft??? That's not including the other rounds, & don't give me the guys waiting in line r better. Both schools have recruited very well the last few years, just don't understand why we r "docked" for losing players, but Bama is almost thought to be better although they lost alot of guys....

I'd agree with the OP.
DB's wont be as deep as normal. However, I think that Simon has a lot of potential to surpass what people think he capable of.
Loston will be a good player for us if he can stay healthy.
I'd still say we are going to be elite in that position group.

I think this is a good look at the LSU D for 2012. But I absolutely cannot wait to see our young DB's play. If you have never seen Micah Eugene play his football instincts are off the chart along with fantastic talent from Collins, Mills and Martin. They will have some growing pains but the front seven will help this group a ton. I think some bring up a legitimate point in that Bama lost more than we did last year and will have the same growing pains, should be fun to watch.

well observed and articulated post. it also happens to agree with my take on LSU's D in '12. are you sure you're a bama guy? i mean, no flame, no better than thou attitude, or anything. wonders never cease.

LSU will have a stronger front seven in 2012, even though they lost Brockers and Adams, they have All-American lineman stacked up like cord wood. They will be even more dominating and deeper up front.
They lost two LBs who were undersized and also relatively slow. We didn't find out until the NFL combine that Alabama's bigger LBs were also faster than LSU's. The new guys will be inexperienced but will be a huge upgrade in both talent and speed. These guys will be able to cover the wheel route even if it is Knile Davis.
LSU lost 4 of its top 6 DBs.(Claiborne, Taylor, Brooks and Mathieu) They still have the best safety in the country in Eric Reid. That guy is a baller and he brings the wood. Taylor was a solid safety and there is likely to be little drop-off in Loston. Claiborne was the best CB in America. He was as good of a cover corner as PP7, and LSU had the best DB in CFB for two straight years. Simon is solid, but he is no Claiborne. No team will fear throwing at him and there will be a significant drop-off. Brooks was probably the best third corner in America last year, and would have started for all but a few teams( ran a 4.3 forty at the combine). His replacement will not be as good as Ron Brooks was.
The Honeybadger was not a shut down cover corner, but he was a sure tackler and a disruptive force on the edge blitz and stripping the ball. There will be a significant drop-off at CB and also as a returner.
The question becomes can the front 7 make up for the weaker (comparatively) secondary this year? Can Mingo and Montgomery apply enough pressure that even freshmen CBs can be successful?
Make no mistake that LSU will have an outstanding secondary this season, but it will not be as good as last year's.

All I know is, I am not worried about the defense AT ALL. Every year since the chief has been here the D has gotten better.
It will be a top 5 D again this year as will bamas.
Unless stud gets retarded, there is absolutley no reason for our offense not to be top 30. We have ridiculous talent there.

Bama lost three members of its secondary in the draft
(Mark Barron, Safety, 7th pick;
Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, 17th pick;
Dequan Menzie, CB, 5th round)
I think Alabama's secondary will regress some as well in 2012. Although Lester and Milliner return Bama has no one that is as good as Mark Barron. Milliner is comparable to Kirkpatrick but after that we have no experienced CBs and will be relying on a juco transfer (Belue) and a third year 5* (Fulton) who has only played on special teams. These guys are talented but inexperienced and unproven. They will be tested at Arkansas. We will know a little more after the Michigan game.
I think these two defenses are very comparable this year. Both will rely on unproven, young talent to compliment their returning core of elite All-Americans.
I expect a knife fight in Tiger stadium in November. I just hope Bama remembers to bring a gun.

By my count bama lost three of top four CBs, jones was #4.
Also lost two of top three safties, lowery and barron.
Simon just might have to come back if he isn't a sure fist round pick. That would be awsome. Him and TM7 reunited in '13.
Who had fulton as a 5*?

Phelon Jones never saw the field. He may have been listed as the fourth corner on the depth chart.
Will Lowery was a walk-on who played in Bama's dime package. He was injured (knee) in mid season and was replaced by Sunseri.
Bama has two 5* safeties with HaHa Clinton Dix and Landon Collins. Unfortunately, neither has beaten out 3* Sunseri for the starting safety job as of today.
Fulton played in the UnderArmour allstar game and was listed as a 4* and 5* recruit. I think 24/7 had him as a 5.

quote:Agree that TM7 will be missed, but I think instead of the offense having to pick up the slack, the upgraded linebacker play will lessen the absence of our best playmaker.
And I agree that TM will be missed more than some want to admit, but the offense should pick up some of that slack and not have to rely on those sparks he provided on ST's.

Interesting that Phelon Jones, the CB transferred from LSU and has 3 championship rings, although I am not sure that he ever played a down in any of the BCSCGs. He was at LSU in when they won in 2007, transferred to Bama and was part of the 2009 and 2011 NCs. He is the Robert Horry of college football.

I actually felt bad for the kid..don't get me wrong, i love LSU, but his mom was making an arse of herself and should've let landon enjoy his moment..

Truth.
I hope he will be a special teams nightmare and play some situational safety in some of the dime packages. Kid is too good to redshirt but Saban's defense is complicated. He was not an early entrant so he has a lot to learn. Hopefully, he will be getting some reps when Bama goes to Tiger Stadium. Should be a wild night.
