Germany had to. What they did was so offensive and evil that they had no choice but to completely disown it.

I think southern traditions do us harm as well, but don't compare those people who cherish them to nazis. That's fricking ridiculous.

I'm not comparing them to Nazis. I'm calling them stubborn and ignorant and selfish.

Haha, I said that comparison was too dramatic... If you would read my post. Also, no one wins when comparing atrocities against other human beings.

The only reasonable comparison to Nazis is Mississippi State.

#HeilState

Also, Richard across is now whining about the shift from OM to UofM in academics on H2H - lending a voice to the idiots so they feel validated.

Im originally from New York and hearing the name Ole Miss before really knowing much about the school never made me think of any sort of racism.

Comparing the South's reliance on slavery to Nazi Germany is deplorable.

OBReb6 has a point. The Germans just don't bring it up, like we should. Instead, because Dan Jones is a spineless, overly-apologetic pussy, we create an entire, taxpayer-funded position devoted to diversity.

Every.Single.fricking.Time the VP of Diversity Relations, or whatever his name is, makes a statement, the "vestiges of segregation," both de jure and de facto, will be shoved back into the spotlight to say "HEY! HEY! LOOK!!! HEY! EVERYONE LOOK!"

What happened in 1960 has no bearing on what happens in Oxford in 2014. Get the frick over it if you think otherwise.

What we, as alumni, really need is someone to say "I'm not here to comment on what happened in 1962 since I was born in 1989." Done. End of discussion.

Political correctness

Exactly this

Ole Miss doesnt bring any racism its self. Its all from the school and history of the school itself.

Changing the name Ole Miss for any reason wont change anything.

We could get rid of "Rebels" "ole Miss" "Dixie" "the flag" and EVERYTHING else and people will still look at us as that racist school EITHER WAY.

Just the way it is

No one is comparing the university to the country of germany.

however similarities can be found between southern traditionalists and neonazis...which is what I said. Both groups try to hold onto old symbols and neither of them are trying to go back to slavery.

Its the people im talking about...not the institution. Fun fact...german has been paying reperations for years

Hmm...lets go back a few years

2003: "Colonel Reb is and will always be our mascot"
Chancellor Robert Khayat

You see what a lie that turned out to be.

Some of y'all are very naive to give complete trust into what comes out of the Lyceum. While I don't believe there is any intention to do away with the name "Ole Miss" AT THIS TIME, don't be shocked in few years down the road that this could change.

I'm old enough to remember the complete progression of the intentional transformation of the University of Mississippi. I was in school when the flag was done away with. People foolishly said "that's all that's going to happen". It progresses to doing away with Colonel Reb on the side line. Khayat said "Colonel Reb will always be our mascot". Then Colonel Reb was conmpletly done away with.

Then "From Dixie with Love" was canned.
Blaming it on the students was convenient but it would have happened anyway.

Colonel Reb was replaced with Mr. Ole Miss

Now the term "Ole Miss" is being brought up. Jones says the Ole Miss is being retained in "the proper context".
It's just the natural progression. Don't be surprised if it's not completely gone within a decade.

Ole Miss is a MUCH better university today than it was when Khayat took over. Bitch and moan all you want, but these changes have made a huge difference.
