Durant

I would say that Durant is the epitome of a Hell hole. Long-story but it wasn't the locals that was the issue but it was so uncomfortable I couldn't wait to get away from the situation....guess it has jaded me towards that place so badly that I cringe every time I pass the exit on 55.

What's the long story? Give me a plot summary

I got downsized out of a job and had to take a job working for a MS based company just to make ends meet until I could get back into my line of work. Anyway this company had a plant up there (spent 50% of my time at the corporate office in Jax and 50% of my time in Durant). Well the "COO" was the owners right hand man that was in charge of the plant was the biggest racist a-hole in the world and hated me as well. Personally, think it had to do with he knew I was about 10X smarter than him, had college degrees when he didn't, had a military background and workers actually respected me (all because I would roll up my sleeves and work like they had to). When he realized that the locals, who were all black, liked me, he started being even a bigger arse than he usually was to the workers in front of me because he knew I did not approve. He treated them like indentured servants. The one time that sticks out in my mind was he told the maintainence guy that he needed to drive to Jackson on Saturday and mow his yard. When the maintainence man said he couldn't because his daughters birthday party was Saturday the COO told him "it will be awful hard to pay for birthday party's if you don't have a job". Needless to say as soon as I could get out of that company I did. When I put in my 2 weeks noticed the COO waited for the owner to leave for the day and called me in the office to inform me he wouldn't honor the notice, that I was fired and to leave immediately....to this day he is one of the few people I fantasize running into and just beating him to a bloody pulp.

Nothing about that surprises me. Holmes county is so ridiculously segregated. I would guess less than 10 white kids attend public school in Holmes county.

The guy was one of the biggest racist pricks I have ever met besides being the biggest a-hole in the world. He failed out of college up in SW MO and had a intellectual Napolean's complex a mile wide! Long story short, the people needed the jobs to survive and he took pleasure in abusing them.

I'm enjoying Tupelo. There are some really cool spots, just need more of them.

At my age (25) I would rather live in Tupelo than Madison. Madison is so gat dang bland. Nice town with good schools, sure, but boring.

Tupelo is no Mecca, but there is stuff to do or drive to.

Yeah, Madison is not for 20somethings. It's for families with kids or old fricks like me. Sort of glad I spent most my single days (post 1st marriage) in Chicago, St Louis, a college town with lots of co-eds with "Daddy issues" and then Jackson proper.

It's really beautiful in the fall. Definitely one of the prettiest parts of the state.

Well it sounds like your sister was in my younger brother's grade and your older brother was in same grade as my older brother.
