I think the question we need to be asking is do we want our electoral process to be more efficient or do we want it to be merely an exercise of one's freedom & right as a citizen? IMO, voting shouldn't be viewed as just a gesture or action. We have our process because we believe to a certain degree that it is the best way to run a nation. We are saying that the people, not the government, have the power. A citizen needs to accept some responsibility in the process. A person's vote is a *sacred* thing. By voting, a citizen is saying "This is my decision on how the country/state/city should be best run." Simply pulling a lever shouldn't be the only responsibility a citizen has in the process. If someone can't prove who they are, name the three branches of government, or answer some other basic civics questions, then they are doing a disservice to their country and devaluing the votes of responsible citizens. IMO, they are disrespecting the process because they are demonstrating that it isn't worth their time to accept even the smallest responsibility to make sure their vote remains sacred.

That's why I am all for voter ID and/or a small test. Make it free, fair, and available to everyone. If there is any kind of wrongdoing in the application of those standards, then throw the guilty parties under the jail. However, if proving your identity or your basic knowledge of our country dissuades you from voting, then you are admitting that your right to vote isn't that important to you.

Everyone should be allowed to vote, but they should acknowledge their role in the process. The government shouldn't be the one demanding this responsibility from the voters. The people should be the ones demanding it from their fellow voters.

Of course I also think Election Day should be on a Saturday, there should be no party affiliation listed on a ballot, judges shouldn't be elected, and there should be term limits for every office.

Not everyone should be allowed to vote, only those that have shown they are willing to bring something to and sacrifice themselves for the society should be allowed to steer its direction.

People joke about the whole "white landowning Christian male" requirements of early America but it wasn't too far off from the right idea. I mean...that was the army at the time. I'm not saying suffarage should be based on race, gender or religion but it should definitely be based on commitment. If you don't bring anything to the table you shouldn't be sitting at it.

Here's how I would install voting if I was king:

Wait, if I was king, frick yo votes. If I was in charge of the voting, though:

(All votes are counted per election)

1) If you paid net taxes in the last year, you get 1 vote this year.
2a) If you served in the military last year, you get 1 vote this year or
2b) If you were discharged from the military honorably, you get one vote per year for the rest of your life, except in
3) If your arse is currently under imprisonment, you lose one vote in the current year.

If you fulfill 1 and 2, that's two votes for you, and if you fall under 3 but also fulfilled 1 and 2 for the previous year, you net 1 vote.

Benefits: eliminates representation without taxation, assessed year to year so people can work to change their situation if they really want to vote, gives more voting power to people who truly want to serve their country the most (pay taxes and serve in the military).

I've always thought it would be interesting to make people vote based on issues rather than names or party.

Voting would take longer but the outcome of a lot of elections would be dramatically different. Instead of going into a booth and block voting one party or selecting a name, you are presented with a 10-20 question "survey" based on issues relevant to the national election. Your vote would be cast based on your responses to the survey without ever being able to just pick the Republican or Democrat.
