The south was robbed of all wealth, not until the 70s did any of it start coming back. That might have something to do with it.

Let me think, let me think.. what was it, I know there was something.. ahh, yes, slavery.

Between racism, skewed religious views and obesity, this part of the country has become the armpit of America.

What the hell happened?

The "different" thing has been ingrained in southern society for hundreds of years now. Mostly because of economic reasons.

A lot of the differences you see today can be loosely tied to the civil war. The south was left in economic ruins after the war, and more so than it would have been had Lincoln not been assassinated. It took decades to really recover from that, and subsequently left the south lagging behind the rest of the country. Therefore, the average southerner is not as wealthy compared to the rest of the country, and I think that has a lot to do with the obesity issue. Poor people eat less healthy.

The war thing has also created generations of underlying resentment towards the rest of the country. I think it's a subconscious thing, and not something that people think about and say "I hate them damn yankees because of the war", but something that has still been lingering since then, and has much to do with how the rest of the country talks about the south. So a lot of southerners want to keep to themselves and not be like everyone else.

The racism thing is mostly bullshite. The only aspect that you might see more in the south would be offensive language, and even then I'm not convinced. Northerners sit on their high horse, while they live in completely segregated communities and rarely deal with any black people in their day to day lives. Southerners of all races live and work together more so than any other part of the country, and it isn't even close.

Its everywhere, but in the South people are not as hesitant to tell you how they feel about other groups of people.

eta: not all southerners, obviously.

This is a LONG subject. Economic history, migration patterns, geography, the war between the states, and a list of other factors contribute to how the south is today.

The South is not the armpit of America anymore. Right-to-Work laws, low state taxes and regulation, and new migration are spurring economic growth in the region. The south has traditionally produced the lions share per capita and total numbers of the US military, only recently outpaced by SoCal (numbers) and western states like Montana (capita). Southern military tradition is so ingrained that it is a common saying in the army 'Army culture is southern culture'.

The gulf coast area in particular is getting ready to boom because of some of these reasons. Location doesn't hurt either, it is a coast...

Robbed?

Well, when you lose a war of independence based largely on the demand that you continue to own human beings...

Pick a fight, get your arse kicked, take your medicine like a man.

Now, to be fair, the North was also largely to blame for the problem of slavery and profited quite a bit too but the North also shared in the economic pain of the war and suffered more deaths from the war.

Maybe I should have used the word 'stripped' of all wealth, or 'lost' all wealth. And really what I'm talking about is post war, reconstruction era stuff. A lot of northerners took advantage of the situation and essentially robbed the south after the war, bringing its wealth back north.

this. Have a few friends from Boston - the stories are incredible. People are racist everywhere, it's normal. The British are probably the most racist people in the world.

What I've noticed is that southerners are more open about their racism, rather than being closet racists like yankees. I have also noticed that southern whites are more likely to have actual black friends than northerners.

Yeah, that's exactly the case.

The OP had a few concerns, the fact the south really didn't start to recover financially until the later parts of last century played a role in his concerns.

Is fiscal conservatism your only reason for believing this? Because the rest of the country is already subsidizing the South, we have the poorest states and the least amount of tax revenue.

Do you realize that only in the past 6 years many Southern states became majority republican in their State legislatures? I know MS had never had a R majority in both state houses until just a few years ago.

Only recently have Southern states began to adopt more conservative policies. The area is rapidly growing in industry, largely due to tax breaks and "right to work" anti union stances.

The shift won't happen overnight, but businesses are flocking to Southern states and rapidly fleeing the liberal run Northern States.

Shhhh don't try and inject truth and logic into a liberal's argument. It makes them uneasy and leads to mindless biased empty responses.

This could apply to any number of groups... including Christian conservatives.
