I've only been through Memphis (stayed one night), and I always thought Memphis was Southern. Hell it's right at the border of Mississippi and Arkansas, how could it not be?

It is a very nice suburb, nothing to be sorry about.

It just happens to be less than 5 minutes from Mississippi.

A few reasons, and all are generally speaking and painting with a broad brush. Certainly doesn't apply to everyone in the South.

1. Lack of education, or poor education.
2. General distrust of outsiders - the damn Yankee syndrome if you will.
3. Southerners clutch the Bibles a little tighter than the rest of the country.

I thought it was improving a bit, but then this country elected a black president and it has gotten worse since then, IMO.

To be fair, I'm not referring to Christianity as a skewed religion. It's more of the condemning type attitude and intolerance I see in so many down here. Including my own family.

I think this is where you get off track.

Read "The Myth of Southern Exceptionalism" if you've got time. The author makes a great case that the South, while different, isn't drastically different from the rest of the country in terms of religion, politics, etc.

But, to answer why people are stuck in their ways, the answer is simply societal pressure. People don't want to change the way they've always done things or thought about things because they don't want to alienate themselves from their friends and family.

Great point. We're not all that different and less so with the advances in communications.

Eh, not really. Racists are pretty well sprinkled everywhere, from what I've seen.

I do love the story of how racist the south is yet the largest groups of things like the klan and the skinheads are found in the midwest and northeast

I will agree and I think people are racist by default.

they are sprinkled every where but it is more prevalent in the north. Its more subtle in the way they are doing it but democrats are more racist than republicans. Democrats infest the northeast of the country. The greatest racism in america is affirmative action

also the north likely has more foreigners if we don't count mexicans, and we all know that europe is far more racist than america.

I agree, I think the definition of true racism is skewed. People have a tendency to stick with what is familiar. If you are raised in middle upper class white neighborhood then you will likely trend toward picking that life style.

this is not true. I've lived in the north and the south and can compare the 2.

i've spent plenty of time in the north and seen more bigotry and hate than a lot of my time in the south. California as well.

now that's not true everywhere in the south because i grew up in a lily white farming community. they were all racists, but i don't see a lick of it here where i'm at currently.

i'm not saying either is more or less racists, but to say blanketly that the south is moreso is ignorant.

Seconded.

There are certainly racists outside of the South, and structural/institutional racism is pretty strong in the Northeast and Midwest, but the South still has a lot to work on.

The midwest has ton. That's where most of your supremacist groups are.

you have southern guilt so you can't. I have been all over the country and while the south has some old school racism its not nearly as bad as something like affirmative action. which is just veiled racism
