welfare is the most systematic racism we have
I hate using terms like that because it feels so much like race-baiting, but it's true to an extent. I think a bigger "-ism" it represents is "class-ism," however. The welfare system perpetuates itself not based upon one's melanin levels, but by preying upon the difficult realities of lower class life.
It harms the very people it's supposed to be helping by penalizing them for attempting to leave the metaphorical plantation of their poverty.

I'm a Christian but believe gays should be able to marry and should be able to adopt. I also drink a good bit and have premarital sex so those fall under the hypocritical umbrella as well. Does anyone actually give 10 percent of their paycheck to the offering? I heard that's what you're supposed to do but that's a lot. After rent, utilities, 401K, etc., 10 percent looks a whole lot more.

i call it racism pretty blatantly. LBJ set it up at the time for blacks. We can say it was "for everybody" and there are plenty of every race that benefits from it, but to act like the great society wasn't pointed at black culture at the time would be disingenuous. (not directing the statement at you t. just a statement in general)
but i may be turning a blind eye to your opinion due to my biases. I think classism only exists in the eyes of the have-nots and the people who want the votes of the have-nots. The haves are just doing their thing for the most part.

Tithing (10%) was after the Exodus to build the Jewish nation.
It has been swindled down from generation to generation
You will not find that we owe 10% every Sunday in the Bible.
God wants you to pay your light bill and feed your family.

i'm a conservative Christian but think gays should marry and we should legalize pot. i think both aren't inherently "good things" but don't believe my opinion should be inflicted on them.

I am a Christian and go to Church on Sundays, and Bible Study every Monday. I wouldn't say that I'm a hypocrite because I know that it is a vice, but I like to drink whiskey.

and He don't need your loudmouth informing the town."

That's not being hypocritical at all.
Being hypocritical would be to say I'm a devout Christian but I run around on my wife and cheat my taxes. Unrepentantly.
I think you'd be hard pressed to find any Christian on this board who thinks drinking is a sin.

Drinking in excess is.
However.. being a Christian isn't about being perfect. It's about being forgiven for our weaknesses and sins. All fall short.

It isn't in scripture. The scriptural admonition is against drunkenness. Of course, the easiest way to avoid getting drunk is to not drink at all. While I don't profess to be a theologian at all, I'd think the same would apply to something like pot or any other mind altering substance.

Absolutely. But I know several folks who use this as a get out of jail free card....irks me badly.

exactly. which is why i said i think drugs can be/are a sin.
I don't know if it would alter my mind to lose control and then be in sin, but fortunately there are laws in place that make the decision pretty easy for me.
that being said, i think we should stop wasting time, money, lives and incarceration rates over the people that want to enjoy pot in the confines of their dwelling.

Smoking a bowl after a day at work is no different to me than having a couple of drinks after work. Something a productive adult can do and have minimum adverse effects.
Now dude wake and baking everyday probably has a problem like the guy who drinks a fifth at home by himself. It's all about moderation.

It's a vicious cycle that's damn hard to break if you don't have outside help, even if you have intrinsic motivation in spades.
That said, there are absolutely those who abuse the system to support their laziness, as well. I just think it's something that is hard to evaluate without knowing all the tangential issues going on with each individual case, but folks on both sides of the debate fall into the trap of making blanket statements far too easily, imho.
This. And as a conservative I actually don't believe in the "cut entitlements as a way to cut Gov't spending" method that many conservatives push for. It could punish someone who actually needs the help. I believe as a conservative our representatives should push to make a more business friendly environment in our economy so that there are more good paying jobs available. Do that, and most people will get off of welfare and then it cuts itself, while increasing tax revenue without raising taxes.

I'm a lefty leaning liberal queer boy, and I have no problem with special ops using "forceful" methods to get answers out of enemy combatants. Just don't let the public find out what your methods are goddamnit.
