I really like Mellow Mushroom. Some locations are much better than others, though. I'm not too fond of the Birmingham location, but Tuscaloosa is great.

Well dominos is practically free for UA students, so I guess that.

I've only been to the Decatur and Columbia locations but they were both delicious. Is the Birmingham one newer? I'm also not sure how they operate...are they franchised?

The Birmingham one has been here a while. At least since I was in elementary school (late 90s). No idea how it's operated.

Considering that's all we have outside of Louisiana, we can't really complain

There are 2 Mellow Mushrooms in Bham. One in Southside has been there 10-15 years. The one in the burbs has been there about 10 years. I've had good and bad pizzas from both, but usually they're pretty good, just overpriced.

I disagree. Most smaller cities in TX at least have some sort of authentic NY style pizza place. CS has Antonio's right next to campus and by the bars and I believe there's a place in Bryan as well. When I lived in Midtown in Houston there were a multitude of NY style options that delivered to me plus the nicer more gourmet places. I'm sure it's no different in Atlanta, Nashville, Memphis or Birmingham on a per capita basis

If Hungry Howie's counts, then Hungry Howie's. If they don't, I guess Pizza Hut. I used to like Papa John's more, but when I realized what a tool their CEO is, I decided I'd rather go to Pizza Hut.

Papa John's is our default go-to. Love some of their specialties. Pizza Hut isn't bad, and love their wings.

Not a huge Dominos fan, although they were the shite when I was a kid - 30 minutes or it's free.

For more regional chains I like Mellow. I also really like Nancy's for deep dish, there are a couple here in Atlanta but then you have to get up into the upper Midwest to find them after that.

But still my favorite are the mom & pop places that make everything in house.

It's usually a toss up between Papa Johns and Dominos, but I'd lean towards Papa Johns because they seem to be more consistent.

Dominos was the absolute worst across the board a few years ago, but they really upped the ante when they pretty much admitted their pizza and service was horrendous and went back to the drawing board. One time in grad school, we got a Dominos pizza delivered and it literally didn't have any sauce on it, just cheese and dough. I called and told them and they told me to come by their store and they'd throw me one package of marinara to dip it in. I swore off Dominos for good until they had that come to Jesus moment around 2008.
