Hell, I've I been at places in Tuscaloosa where a noise complaint has been called and they didn't send more than 3 cops.

The door was open and he was there legally investigating a complaint. Alabama state law and a shait ton of case law says he has every right to be there a reasonable amount of time to complete his investigation.

The only reason the door was still open is because he stepped into it and forcefully kept it from being shut.

He was called to investigate a noise complaint. There was no more noise. End of investigation, there is nothing left to reasonably investigate.

Here are the facts:

Excessive force was used.

We don't know what happened before the cameras were turned on.

We don't know the history of the offenders.

Its really not uncommon to send several cops when they know the noise complaint is an ongoing party with several people. Especially in a non-violent town with a large police force that has nothing better to do than bust up parties (like a college town). I've seen this happen in a few different towns including Tuscaloosa.

In Hoover in HS I actually witnessed cops block off a culdesac and have 5 cruisers (2 to a car) on the street just to bust up a house party.
Hell, I've been spotlighted in the woods by a police helicopter while they had officers wait by the tree line to nab people running out and more units by people's cars in case they got past.

Bored police departments put a lot of effort into stopping kids from having fun

It looked like there may have been 10 people at that party.

It says that's what the infraction was.......if you can show otherwise, please do and ill retract.

Let this be a lesson. Cop knocks, go outside and close the door behind you. His access is now cut off and he needs a warrant after that. He actually thinks you're being nice and compliant by coming outside.

Close the door behind you!

After watching the videos and reading the story, I hope every cop in this video is fired.

I cant even begin to describe the idiotic efforts Gardendale has put in on multiple occasions to bust up bonfires in the woods. 10-12 folks sittin in lawn chairs around a bonfire, a couple hundred feet from the nearest tree or foliage (usually a power line trail), drinking cold beers, talkin and laughin and listening to the radio. All of a sudden, surrounded by no less than 8 sets of headlights, idiots screaming across bullhorns, 8 sets of obnoxious flashing lights.... Most of us would just sit there and keep drinking our beer and talking. We'd pull our our wallets and get our ID ready and just hold it up when they came over, never breaking our conversation. It would piss them off so bad. They'd grab one of us and start yelling at us about being where we dont belong and to pack up and get the frick out... then I'd produce my gate key and written permit to the land and smile.

The looks on their faces never got old.

The first two are valid points. The third one is 100% irrelevant according to the constitution.

In Saudi Arabia you may have a point.

finally got to watch all 4 videos. These are the kinds of cops that I smile about when I hear about them getting shot later. One particular in Warrior that completely fricked me over, got shot a couple months ago. I laughed so hard I couldnt see straight. I've been hoping to see his arse since then so I can laugh in his face.

cops are way out of line and they are getting worse. frick em.

You're the kind of person I laugh at when you get your arse kicked or robbed and the cops tell you shite happens. I agree, a lot of cops are out of line and the ones in college towns are terrible, but to laugh about a guy who puts his life on the line for others being shot just shows what a punk you are.

Wow, congrats to TPD on being a worse collegiate town police force than OPD. OPD are dicks, but they didn't taste or beat the dog shite out of us.

Which he can do. You can like it or not, but the law is firmly on his side. You challenge that and you're going to lose on the scene as these folks did and you're going to lose in court.

So if he's called to a noise complaint and there's a drunk, passed out 14 year old on the sofa but the music's off everything is good? Got it. I'm not saying that happened here, but to say his right to investigate ended when they turned the music down is wrong on every single level.

It is relevant in terms of the initial level of response. If you've had constant problems with a place, you don't send just one unit.

Simple as this right here. It is incredibly easy to avoid getting your arse kicked by the police. First and best way is avoid doing things that would place yourself in a position to even have an adversarial confrontation.

Trying to slam the door on and officer that's in a place where he has a legal right to be violates that very simple first rule.

Going outside will make the officer think you're cooperating. In this case, it would have also kept his almost-certainly-drunk friend from throwing fuel on the fire by antagonizing everyone with their peanut gallery advice.

This is of course true, but it's a second question.

There are two issues at play:

Should you show any disrespect to a police officer? The wise answer is no

But people who so often defend police after these videos ignore another important question: How should tax payer supported employees behave in the face of disrespect?

The answer to that is almost certainly not to behave the way these officers did.

Were the guys getting roughed up wise? No
Were the tax payer supported government employees acting like lawless thugs? Yes

We don't draft police. They apply out of free will and we pay their salary. Asking them to not beat the dog shite out of someone being rude isn't too much.

None of what I said obviously applies if you're a far left statist who thinks the government is perfect.

I've said several times upthread that there was clearly excessive force used in making the arrests. I'm not making any attempt to argue otherwise.

I'm arguing against the people that are saying the officer had no reason to be standing in the door, the people in the room had every right to force him outside by shutting the door in his face, and that their attempt to do so didn't constitute a criminal offense. They're wrong on every single one of those points.

Don't misunderstand what I'm saying. The level of those offense didn't warrant an arse kicking at all.

As to the 'how to avoid' part, no it isn't too much to ask your law enforcement officers to behave in a professional and legal fashion. It should be expected but just as in all professions there are those that simply aren't going to do it, are having a bad day, misread the situation, or fall into one of a myriad of circumstances that can trigger an incident.

The problem is, of course, that LE has the ability to legally take your freedom and your life so it is much like when you see someone about to run a red light and you've got the green. You want to pull on out and expect him to stop? Go ahead, but that is a great way to get "he had the right of way" on your tombstone.

GeeOH also raised another very valid point. If you ARE doing something illegal, going outside and closing the door behind you removes the 'in plain view' option and then requires a warrant.
