Either that or he doesn't know that the grits you buy in the store and get in restaurants are made from hominy.....

No, I didn't know that. I'm getting quite the education on grits in this thread.

My Kentucky grandmother made grits from hominy. She always called them hominy grits.

She had moved to Kentucky from Alabama by way of Tennessee where she met my grandfather. I guess I'm biased against store bought grits because of her.

Do bears sh*t in the woods?
Is the pope catholic?

what I want to know is if bears are catholic and if the pope sh*ts in the woods.

Western Arkansas, born and raised and currently residing...I do enjoy okra and have for my entire life.

I lived in the NW corner of Arkansas for years and ate a steady diet of catfish, grits, and okra. All 3 were easy ti find so not sure how you claim to have missed them all these years. It is almost like living a lifetime in Altus and never drinking wine. Possible, but highly improbable.

My great grandparents and grandparents were in the Hot Springs area and the same could be said of that area as well. Lots of local places to get catfish, and where you find catfish, grits can usually found too.

Fried okra?

Fresh okra is better, especially if your fried okra comes from a bag of frozen okra, that can be nasty. Best okra can be found in a nice gumbo with some garlic, onions, and some cayenne pepper!

By far one of the most asked for dishes on Friday nights was shrimp and grits with redeye gravy ... especially at the Charleston location but really in all locations. That and shrimp scampi and fried chicken and waffles, and there was the livernips (are you Lutheran and did you serve them with cream gravy?). People would come for miles around on Friday nights and there would be lines out the door. Then, when the fried shad roe was in season, every spring, there could be a two hour wait to get in to the lowcountry locations. Sometimes we would have to turn people away by 10PM because we would run out of shad roe and grits.

Got damung! You and me need to eat together sometime. These are the foods of my youth! Can you get shad roe anymore? That was awesome!

Eaten pounds and pounds of grits. Pretty much every morning growing up as a kid with every breakfast.

That said, don't remember having a bowl in the past decade or so. Parents generally just do biscuits, eggs and bacon with some fruit when I'm home for holidays now.

Love grits! Butter, salt and pepper! Cheese! Or shrimp n grits! Never tried them with syrup, just doesn't sound right but would probably like them.

A much older friend of mine that passed away a year or so ago did something interesting with his leftover grits. He would put them up in Jelly Jars and refrigerate them until the congealed. Then he would remove his "Grit loaf" from the jar, slice them and then fry them. He was the only person I knew that did this.

We did this growing up. Extremely tasty! And it works for oatmeal too

Oh yeah ... I've got the man when it comes to shad roe. Dealt directly with his Dad and Uncle for years. Dealt with him for the last few before I sold out ... but he's still in business, still supplying. He did a big seasonal deal with U.S. Foods, something his Dad refused to do with P.Y.A. but it's working for him.
