Point of all this, and to your post, is exactly what you said. Make yourself valuable. Distinguish yourself from everyone else. Take pride in everything your job requires you to do. Do your job and do more. Go the extra mile....everyday. After I earned my degree and decided to leave Athens to get on with my life, they (RM and GM) wanted me to become a manager. I told them no thanks...it is not for me. "But you worked so hard here, and you communicate so well, you have great leadership skills, etc.. This seems Taylor made for you." I appreciated that confirmation. I really did but explained to them that I never intended to make a career out of that job. I believe in being the best....first in class....at any endeavor. It is an issue of pride.
damn right and damn well said. one thing my parents taught me (despite the rent and college thing) is that you and you alone are responsible for your successes and failures. you are only limited by your will to do.

Maybe they were meant for those people, but the reality today is that the average age of a minimum wage earner is around 30. So while they may not have intended to work there as a career, it has turned into one due to a weak job market coupled with their low skills/education.
So go to community college and do something about the part you can control. Transfer into a 4-year program once you get your associates. Chances are a lot higher you're going to get off the line at McDonald's and make $15+ an hour if that's the case. And making less than that and, given your claim that McDonald's is mostly minorities, you can go to school for free in the meantime.
When did the expectation change that people don't have to go above and beyond to receive a raise/improve their position? Out of HS I worked 38 hours a week at a youth shelter making just enough to get by while going to school. And worked my way up as jobs opened up to do so. Was it always easy? Nope. Plenty of times I had to do without. But I did it. And it wasn't always a great job market either.
And while I'm sure the next comment will be "well these people have families to raise", well what also happened to taking personal responsibility for having children before you were financially ready to do so? How is it at 33 and not growing up in a high-income household by any means was I able to keep from getting knocked up but others cannot? You can't sit here with a straight face and tell me majority of McDonald's workers are down on their luck 30+ year olds with a family of 4.

How condescending of you to try to shite all over someone who showed a pretty solid example of how to not cry about not getting their $15 an hour as a fast food worker and actually doing something about it.

That shite makes me laugh and pissed me off at the same time. Yeah you're ridding of the morons who think they need $15/hr to work a register but you're also screwing over the high school kids and college kids

That is a good point, but we shouldn't punish the kids of parents who make bad decisions. That is why I support free school lunch programs and the like.

Indeed. I countered his condescension with some of my own, jokingly. I just don't have the patience for the "look at my story and how I succeeded, you do the same" stuff. Not everyone is equipped with the same skill sets, or motivation, or intelligence. Not everyone is able to take advantage of opportunities presented to them. Lord knows I've squandered some opportunities in my life. Spare me your story, because we all have a story.
The question remains what do we, as a society, do with those that, for whatever reason, are stuck in low wage jobs all their life? Hearing some people talk we need to do away with public assistance. If we're going to have capitalism, we're always going to have bottom feeders, and if we want to remain civilized, we're going to have to offer public assistance to these people. We can't continue on this road of brow beating these people for being lazy, leeches, deadbeats, stupid, or whatever other derogatory is used for them simply because they are on government assistance because their job doesn't pay them enough to get by, while at the same admonishing them for having the audacity to ask for a higher wage so maybe they can get off public assistance. If this trend continues, there's going to be a revolt. Maybe not in my lifetime, or your lifetime, but a breaking point will be reached at some point.
And yes, many of them do need to take some personal responsibility. And yes, many of them abuse the public assistance programs.

Ok a place my retired mother works at (she gets bored at home so she went back to work) pays $9.75 an hour to a brand new employee, there are several employees there who receive public assistance and they all last about 2 months because and I quote "I make more money not working than I make here after they reduce my benifits". We need assistance I don't deny this but the system is broken when you can make more being a burden than you can at a legit job.

Yes, the system is broken. But on which end is it broken? Seems logical to me that someone would choose to stay home and watch TV and get government assistance than go work a shitty job with an a-hole boss for less money.

Probably much better service. I don't worry about a robot spitting in my food either...Put the savings in an upgraded menu.
Brilliant!

See there it is, that's the attitude that keeps generations on welfare, there are assholes everywhere but if I want to eat and have a roof over my head and maybe a nice ride, I'm going to put up with those assholes because I'm not a lazy entitled pos who wants it all given to me.

That exactly what I said. Only not even close.

That's exactly why I never frequent fast food restaurants. I don't want to consume the DNA (spit or worse) of a bitter adult who hates me because he has to serve me.
I would much prefer a meal prepared by a robot.

This is basically saying you should be among the top workers. Say it's the top 10% (although it could be any percentage less than 100). By definition, 90% won't be in that top 10%. How are they going to eat?

By doing something to better themselves and get a better damn job instead of being lazy fricks. Give up the non necessities in their lives (expensive smart phone, cable tv, etc) live within their means. That's not going to happen as long as they know they can suck Uncle Sam's (the working men and women who pay for all this shite) tit for the rest of their lives.
