I'm tired of people defending the religion as a religion of peace to convince the populace that a majority of muslims are good people.
What if the majority of muslims support Sharia Law? Does that make them good people?
If a majority support Sharia Law, then they are just as responsible for an "infidel's" head being sawed off as the executioner. If they support Sharia Law, the entire society is equally responsible for homosexuals being tossed off skyscrapers, or an honor killing of a girl who was raped, or the stoning of a couple who committed adultery.
The culture is responsible.
Read about what happened in Lebanon. It went from a peaceful and prosperous country that was governed by a Christian majority to an Islamic controlled hellhole within a few generations. How?
Muslim families had more children and eventually became the majority. The moment that happened? Sharia Law. Civil war. Mass Christian massacres. Hezbollah terrorists. Rockets fired into Israel. War.
Look at the country now. This will happen within a generation in Europe and Britain, and perhaps a century in the United States.

The middle East is fricked up (to our standards) on so many levels, for so long, with so many ripple effects it can't be understood. Groups rise due to a small scale goal, or lack of certian presence then their goals shift focus with a constant changing desired end-state. All what we can (or should do) is focus on OUR best intrests.. Which change day-to-day due to their multi-tiered instability. Tribal lines don't match border lines, but are untimately more important to the individual.
USA gave Pakistan a small frickton not too long ago for infrastructure (school focused) improvements, only to find 10 months later EVERY textbook given to the younger population (6-9 yr old)had loads of hate driven anti american text. I'm still chewing on that one.

I just don't think anyone is saying let them jihad all they want. Sure over there, the people in power want to keep that power so they preach violence and murder. Which i personally think has a lot more to do with what is going on than religion does. Advancement of western culture and ideas puts power in the hands of the masses (that is the idea at least) and that is a direct threat to how shite is currently done. Most of the leaders just use radical and violent teachings to spur the masses to try and expel these ideas.

Which is why i argue against blaming the religion so much. It will not achieve the over all goal of peace and unity, at least that should be the goal.

Western style systems of government and law also creates the perfect legal conditions for Islam to thrive, and fanatics are just realizing the potential.

Goal of religion is to attract as many followers and control the masses (IMO as a nonbeliever in the major religions today).

Jesus Eddie, they don't share the same goal. They want you to either convert, or you'll deal w/ the sword. They are not interested in negotiations, surely it cant be that hard to fathom?

I started this thread to learn more about what's going on in Syria, but after reading this thread I've learned how oblivious some people are.
I'm somewhat shocked at the people who are still living in a pre-911 understanding of Islam. We've been at war now for what, going on 15 years??? Who do you think we're fighting over there? Right now US soldiers are being attacked by people who are fighting for Allah. Now I don't agree with exactly how the war was conducted, but come on people.
Again, I highly suggest many of you to read the Quran and understand what exactly we're dealing with here.

I never said they share the same goal. The entirety of my posts have said kill the violent radicals. Make all violent radicals the target regardless of religion or affiliation.
It cannot be that hard to fathom that grouping an entire people together and waging a crusade on them is not the path to peace.

that isn't waging a crusade. A long drawn out crusade against an entire people will lead to more preaching about the evils of America (which at that point would be well founded as not every Muslim deserves to die) and leading to more conflicts and violence in the future even if the goal is eventually achieved.
