Those were classics. It came out when I was very little but he was amazing as Popeye. It takes extreme talent to pull off a character like that. Good morning Vietnam was great too.

Those that feel the most usually battle their whole lives with the urge to end it all. Most people can't relate - and that's not an insult, obviously- but it's like an elephant standing on your chest with a hand clenched on your brain, all while your thoughts race even faster about the tragedy others face on a daily basis. Your thoughts race with how things could be better, usually leading to an internal stagnation, stuck in a perpetual cycle of alcohol and self-medication, always wondering why you can't just think about the things on your daily agenda like everyone else.

He dealt with this his whole life as he was bipolar, but his suffering is over. Some see this as a cowardly act, but it really is a torturous existence never finding comfort or having the ability to relax. RIP Mr. Williams.

He had his demons. Just got out of rehab, and I imagine at that age it would be rough. It's a really hard time for some folks.

This may sound bad, but, I feel worse for the people who live with depression. He took the shortcut out.

What's the shortcut? Does every man not own their life? It's not your role to dictate what his shortcut was. For all you know, he endured more demons than most would tolerate.

I just find it laughable and disturbing that people wish to judge a person when they've had enough of existence.

He was 63 years old and lived with depression most of his life. There's no shortcut to feeling so desperate that you think the world would be better off without you.

I sometimes wonder if people who say things like you're saying even realize there are things like chemical imbalances that effect moods, behavior, etc.

Undoubtedly.

I can understand what you are saying, and agree.

I know people who live with depression. I'm not saying one person's demons are any worse than someone else's, but I certainly do respect the fight they endure on a daily basis. I'll not diminish their fight by saying - "ah, what the frick, go ahead and do it."

I've had anxiety and dysthymia since childhood. I unfortunately dealt with double depression once several years ago and it's one of the worst experiences you can imagine. It's impossible to explain to people how hopeless and dark your thoughts become until you've experienced it. It really is a bottomless pit. I was paralyzed with guilt, anxiety, and hopelessness. The worst part about it is that you don't want to tell anyone what you're going through because you don't think there is any hope or help for you. It's even worse if you have bipolar tendencies like RW apparently did because they have manic episodes that make them act recklessly and impulsively when they are still in a depressed state which is very dangerous.

The main point about true deep clinical depression is that you never completely get over it if you've ever experienced it.

Getting beat? I'd say to most, he was winning. Regardless, it's his xbox to unplug.

Yes, we are. You offered your opinion, I offered mine. That's usually how it works.

I think everyone does. I am that guy the rest of the family knows. I have a life most everyone wants, yet have a constant dark cloud hovering over my head. I wouldn't ever take my own life, as it would destroy my family, but it's a bitch never being excited about anything, and always over-analyzing life in general. But, with that said, I don't fault him. It's the person's burden to bear, and anything you say or do probably wouldn't encourage them one way or the other.

Was out to dinner tonight and saw this on my phone. I really cant believe it. Terrible.

Such a talented actor and seemed like a great person, to the extent you can tell that without knowing someone.

Just goes to show you never know what demons somebody has. We're all just human. I am still troubled by Philip Seymour Hoffmans death, but Robin Williams really surprised me.

Very, very sad. I am sorry for his family.

Good post, I can relate and I feel for you.

I don't tell many people IRL, and can usually maintain normalcy around others, but it's a constant feeling of gut-wrenching anxiety and insomnia.

Govt Tide, all I can say is I hope you are feeling better.

Robin Williams had this amazing manic comedic ability that i wonder if he used to cover up greater pain. I always thought he was "electric" crazy, but in a good way. Maybe not.

Somehow this makes sense, but it makes me very very sad.

Like I said, I hope you and anybody else on here who has the pain of depression is dealing with it well.

You sound like you someone who has successfully overcome dysthymia. I say overcome in the sense that dysthymic people struggle with depression to the point where they have difficulty accomplishing lofty goals and living a normal life.

I have found my ways to mask it and occupy my brain. I take beta blockers on my bad days, as they help with racing heart/sweating, but have gotten off anti-depressants because I couldn't feel anything. I have to exercise almost daily, as it seems to be the only thing to take any edge off. I've also cut way back on alcohol.

Honestly, meeting my wife helped more than anything. She's great and lets me spill all my thoughts one her. It's not fair to her at times, but she loves me and knows it helps me. She keeps me on the straight and narrow and pulls me back when I'm falling.

I wish you the best of luck man, it's a constant struggle. I hope you have people in your life that are understanding.
