Using pregnancy as a "risk" is horse shite.

Anyone can get sick or injured and be put out of work for any length of time. Without warning.

You have 9 months to get ready for a woman to have a baby. If you can't adjust and compensate for the loss of a single employee in nine months time then you shouldn't be running a business.

Yeah and it's adjusted for in everybody's salaries.

There's a big difference too between breaking your arm and going to the doctor twice and getting pregnant and going every two-three weeks for 9 months. Then not to mention you have to allow the mother, what is it now 2 months leave? And that's still not including if they have any complications pre-labor or if they have to go on bed rest for the last month or so before pregnancy.

Eta: I'm not saying it's right but it is economically justifiable just like me paying a higher premium on insurance bc all the data says I'm at more risk to cost them money.

This. It's not necessarily fair but employers have to adjust for this employment risk. Unless you can medically prove you are unable to have children I guess.

Pretty sure it's not legal either.

Because the market doesn't pay women less for doing the same job.

Women earn less at the 'same job' due to tenure and taking breaks for child-rearing, etc.

Only the most dogma-believing lefties actually believe that trope.

Working mothers have it tough though. An employer very well could look at her as a risk, and working fathers don't have the same stigma.

I agree and I really don't want to come off as a supporter of discriminating wages bc I'm not.

I didn't think you were.

I find it funny that every other poster in this thread is a white male (I think) saying it doesn't exist, while I'm the only female who has responded, and I have two specific personal examples where, because I was female, have not gotten a promotion and been paid less.

I'm not trying to sound like a feminist bitch, because as I said before, I shrugged off both instances, but to say it doesn't exist at all is a little presumptuous.

Woah now. Fairly certain I've been strongly in the "it exists" camp.

You said you were passed over for a promotion because they didn't think you could handle the pressure. That doesn't mean you were discriminated against for being a woman.

Nowhere in my previous positions did I not show the ability to handle pressure. My numbers and performance were better over the course of the year than the other colleague's, and when asking for feedback from the interview, there were no critiques on my answers to questions. It was because he thought a male could handle the pressure of that location better than a female.

Now the guy that got it over me ended up making the place crash and burn, and I did take satisfaction in that.

ETA: I actually felt sorry for the guy who got the promotion that tanked. He was a nice guy, and I liked him, but he was a dumbass.

So they told you that the reason they thought you couldn't handle the pressure was because you are female (or was that assumed). Did they say the only reason they thought your colleague was hired due to the fact he was male?

It was said he didn't think a female could handle the pressure, so I inserted myself as that female.

i've worked in majority female and male environments - have to say both can be vicious - all male environments can get pretty gossipy and ridiculous
