By itself....you're correct

But given its context throughout history...its a different story. The same could be said for the flag of the nazi party. The flag, itself, doesn't represent anything racist or oppressive.

You have to be pretty wilfully obtuse to attempt to separate that particular emblem from it's racist connotations

Why don't y'all just cave in and change it like Georgia did?

And actually fly the flag Mississippi flew DURING the Civil War.

Magnolia Flag (1861-1894)

What they are flying now wasn't even introduced to Mississippi until 1894. If it is really about heritage...The Magnolia Flag is the first official flag of Mississippi.

Exactly.

Look at the history of the Swastika...

Originally, the svastika as a sanskrit symbol. It meant "good health", or "good luck".

The earliest known use was an image of one on a bird carved from a mammoth tusk dating back to 10,000 BCE.

The ancient Romans used them in mosaics and can be found in artifacts found in India dating back to 3,000 BCE.

If you see someone with a swastika tattoo today...do you think they are likely paying homage to the ancient Romans? Probably not. The swastika got caught on the wrong side of history. It is not an inherently evil symbol...but its association with Nazi Germany has ruined its legacy.

Btw delta...are you also gonna back keenums statement that he agrees the flag should be changed?

I don't care either way. But the flag we have is our state flag and the universities are state universities funded by public money, so they should fly the flag of the state they represent.

Gov. Bryant should withhold all funding to OM and USM until they comply

Bingo.

ETA: And that's actually a pretty baller flag IMO.

The confederate flag has been on the ms state flag since the end of reconstruction as a way to honor the fallen soldiers on the confederacy. The flag wasn't used by hate groups until around the civil rights era..so in a historical context the state flag precedes the use of the confederate flag as a symbol of hate. If anything we should be putting pressure on hate groups to abandon the flag to preserve it's proper historical heritage

As well as the 4 other universities that don't fly it? Hate to break it to you but Phil Bryant has little to do with the 19% of public funding that ole miss gets.

The entire "public funding" argument is getting pretty tired. Time to put that one to bed. Nothing in state law requiring them to fly it....no matter how pissy you get about it

Then feel free start a movement. I'd be behind this 1000% percent.

You know we basically did it like 15 years ago right? The flag only flies in places required by law and Starkville doesn't fly it at all.

This is basically just Keenum saying we won't take it down at the ROTC buildings, where it is required to fly by law.

Perhaps I just did. Spread the word. We will no longer tolerate hate groups to use the flag that honors our fallen ancestors

That doesn't fit well with his argument about his alma mater having balls. Sounds like they got chopped off a long time ago

Just end it there and ignore all the other bullshite you just said.

And that's not how movements work. You don't just tell everyone else to do your work for you. Hit the pavement and spread the message.

Like I've said before, if it weren't for white liberals, no one would have even noticed whether the flag was flying or not.

Yes. And I'm trying to understand a different viewpoint.

But I'm not allowed to understand because I'm the wrong skin color.
