Numerous Old Testament prophets did pretty abhorrent things by our standards in the name of the God who supposedly inspired them.
The nature of the things being done in God's name is irrelevant. He is God, if he is real he can do as he pleases and inspire his prophets however he sees fit.
Perhaps the scariest thing to think about regarding God and the afterlife is that God would very well be a sadist who punishes everyone for eternity no matter what and there is nothing we can do about it. Such a scenario, while unlikely, is just as likely as any other afterlife scenario proposed thus far.

Most people choose to believe he isn't who he says because it is easier to believe that. It avoids the problem of dealing with the opposite.

I'm not sure it's easier to believe consciousness ends when we die. The idea of Heaven sounds mighty nice in comparison.
