You're smitten with the Atlantic coast and low country. Spend much time in the upstate or east of Columbia and the smitten decreases considerably, IMO.

Certain parts of the upstate, sure. But the Greenville-Spartanburg area is very nice and is growing fast. I think saying that east of Columbia is not a nice area is painting a large area of the state with an even broader brush...a brush that obviously either knows very little about what can be found in those areas, is skewed by the person making the statement...but even more likely, a combination of both.

Where are you from, if you don't mind me asking? If you aren't from SC, have you lived here temporarily ? If so, what area did you reside in? Have you travelled thru all of the areas that you are downplaying?

ETA: And who are you to tell someone whether they are or aren't smitten with something? I would think the person who made the statement would know better than a stranger what he is or isn't smitten with. To tell him that he is wrong regarding his own personal opinion of something seems more than a bit pretentious of you.

Go to any beach in Baldwin County. You'll see more Louisiana tags in parking lots than Alabama tags.

I live in MS, but would move to Birmingham in a heartbeat if the opportunity presented itself.

You should take some time off and go. You owe it to yourself.

I currently reside in oak grove just outside of Hattiesburg, MS which as far as shite to do goes, is one of the better cities in the state.

I grew up in Petal, and OG was our biggest rival. I played on the baseball team for Petal. Man, those were some fun games between the two teams.

I really have no hate for either state. But if pushed to decide I would go with Alabama...love Gulf Shores/Orange Beach and love the area around Auburn.

I have lived in many places in the South including several places in Florida and Alabama, Atlanta, and also California, in Washington DC, Princeton, NJ, and right outside of New York City. I am well-travelled as well in the U.S. and also have spent a lot of time (temporarily lived) in several foreign countries. I am very familiar with North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina, parts of Virginia, Mississippi, Louisiana and Georgia due to relatives and temporary assignments.

I currently live in Fairhope, AL.

I will never live anywhere else. Ever.

I've lived in both, though mostly in Mississippi. They both have problems, but all Southern states have the same problems to some degree or another. But the people are, by and large, good people in both places, and both have some beautiful scenery. There's no reason for it to be a competition -- if we had to compare, I'd take either over the Florida Panhandle any day of the week. Alabamans and Mississippians benefit from feeling free to be Southerners, while Panhandlers always seem a bit overaggressive in their Southerness. My theory is that they're overcompensating because of the fact that most of the state isn't really considered part of the South.

The panhandlers are the original Florida crackers, which were southern US before Mississippi and Alabama existed and then annexed (stole) their property. In other words, they are more true southerners than those who live in the Coastal areas of Mississippi and Alabama. This is an instance where ignorance does not serve you well.

But this does not in any way contradict anything I said. I do, in fact, find them overaggressive in their Southerness compared to Southerners in other states who take a more relaxed yet no less authentic approach, and my theory is that they're overcompensating for the fact that most of the South doesn't really consider Florida particularly "Southern" seems reasonable. "Correct" is open to debate, of course. Dubious history aside, modern-day residents live in a world where they're part of a state that has steadily become more Yankee-fied over the last few decades, and it's only natural that they might have feelings about that issue. They're certainly not going to dust off the Ouija board and check how their ancestors feel regarding the modern world.

I'm in the process of moving to Biloxi, and I think I'm going to love it here, but I'm sure I'd be happy anywhere around the Mobile bay too.

Alabama has hills not mountains. It's void of culture. Outdoors is nice.
eta:

Birmingham is not nice.

Alabamas coastline is 60 miles. 60 lol
