We used an agent just because we know one personally and didn't want to fool with transportation to and from the airport. Be sure to get a Mama Juana. The shows they put on each night are really good too.

Does Excellence have a shuttle they use to get you to and from the airport or is that something that I'll need to set up on my own?

I know they have several agencies set up on site every day for excursions or trips. I'm sure you can set up transportation with them whenever you book. There are taxis and agencies at the airport too but that just seems a little sketchy for me. We got off the plane, went through customs, and then walked to the booth/desk for our agency and they had a private shuttle waiting on us.

Using an agent for resorts is cheaper than any site of you go to the right agent. They have deals where they can price match.

Hey man. Sorry I missed this earlier. You are going to love Excellence. I have been there twice. The pool and pool area is fantastic. Landscaping is perfect and they have the best gym at a resort that I have ever used. They also have a night club on the grounds. Very nice place
I have booked trips both ways. We usually use funjet. Its easy and we basically get the same price.
Going into Punta Cana, you wil need two things. Some cash entering the country. I think its $10 each. Cash. You will pay that going into the airport.
You will need transportation going from the airport to the resort. We always book that before hand. We have used VIP services the most. There are a few others. It should cost you about $75 total for your transportation to and from Excellence.
If for some reason, you don't get it beforehand, there are booths at the airport as you leave to just pay and go. Not sure who you are flying but Delta has its own new wing at the Punta Cana airport. Very nice. Just opened this year. I was there for two weeks in August. It has jet ways and every thing. You can get transportation there but I would get it paid before you leave. You don't have to worry about them jacking up the price.
