Plus, everyday, thousands of people port there on cruise ships and flood the resort. fricking sucked. So crowded you cant even move. It was twice as expensive as other places and half as much fun.

That's true. The casino is meh as well, but the water slide is legit.

We did Key West and it was fine.

Too much ghey. I was there less than 15 minutes and I saw a dude walk another dude down the street on a leash.

See, that is what makes Vacations so much fun. The people watching.

I know this is an old thread, but when you've gone to the Dominican, do you book the trip yourself or use a travel agent? My fiancé and I have found packages much cheaper than what the travel agent is showing us, but I was curious to if this is a safe route to go?

We went to St. Lucia and went the all inclusive route on a Sandals resort. I would recommend that place to anyone

I haven't been to the Dominican but have done two all inclusive trips and booked both through Expedia. Everything went very smoothly on both and the process is very easy.

I've been a handful of places around the Carribbean. My impression is the locales are all fairly similar, so it comes down to the place you stay. Also, for a honeymoon a shorter flight is nice. We did Sandals in the Bahamas. Only a 2-3 hour flight from Atlanta, and the resort was nice enough, though a bit cheesy. Nicest part was it being a couples only resort, so it was pretty chill there the whole time.

I LOVE the Virgin Islands, but it's a little longer flight. BVI is nicer than the USVI, but a lot more expensive. Jost Van Dyke is my favorite locale down there.

If the bride and groom are divers, Anthony's Key in Roatan off Belize.

Over the water bungalos, great diving and excellent food.

I think we are going to book directly through the resort's website. I just wanted peace of mind for not using a travel agent.

That's the right move, just cut out the middle man.

Have you already picked the resort you want to go to, or are you still looking at some of the options there?

I would really look into Expedia or a similiar site. Being able to book the plane tickets and resort may save you some money. I have looked at doing both ways and it always seems like it is a few hundred bucks cheaper than booking flight/resort seperately.

Their website allows you to pick the package and plane tickets at the same time. I guess it's their in-house version of Expedia

As was mentioned earlier, Exvellence resorts are amazing. We did Exvellence Playa Mujeres for our Honeymoon, and it was the most awesome, relaxing time ever.

If you have any questions let me know. And definitely drink lots of Icebergs.

Did you do the excellence club package? I think we want that just for the private beach

We didn't, we chose to go for a nice room( 2 story roof-top terrace) over the Excellence package and I would definitely recommend that. The Private beach part was nothing very exciting, and the beach is just you and 1 other hotel so there is tons of room on it.

Other than that Excellence club package doesn't really seem worth it. Do you know what type of room you are looking at??

In 2001, we honeymooned at the Ocean Club, Bahamas (location of James Bond Casino Royale movie). It was $650/night then. Nothing inlcluded. Everything a la carte. All in, it was a $10,000 honeymoon. But it was an incredible experience.

I tried to go back for our 10th anniversary in Feb of 2011. Our same villa was $1150 per night. Plus, I think the Bahamas hotel tax is something absurd like 22%. And this was at the pit of the recession. So, I balked and we went to Destin instead.

Anyhow, I'm guessing it's $1500/night by now. So pretty outrageous. But if you've got the money, there's no better place in North America that I'm aware of.
