I don't follow

I don't think of people on welfare as shite people or trashy (criminals are a different matter, but I regard them the same whether they're peddling drugs or white collar criminals), just individuals in shite situations without adequate incentive to better themselves organically. Could just as easily be any of us, and who's to say you or I wouldn't try to maximize the system instead of taking the foreign risk of striking out on one's supportive own?

Looking at the world based more on socioeconomic status than melanin count makes things like welfare far bigger than just a race problem. Imho

Ask Straws. I only checked in like 2/3 of the way through and I didn't read the first pages either

Actually I'd say the crux or most important parts have been the last few pages. The video is obviously important, but it's sort of just a way to slide into the Jesus Didn't Exist debate.

It's coming.

I think it would depend a lot of on the mindset of your group. The larger American culture, steeped in our history, is one of individualism and ruggedness. The American Dream, land of opportunity, go make something of yourself, you can work hard and get rich. Something like that. Obviously huge variances among individuals and groups but I think that's a pretty constant theme. This is a problem of insular isolated cultures where this is not the ethos. The culture teaches them something else, that life is something that happens to you rather than something you make, we are beholden to the state, we are victims. Something like that. It's a different mindset, and they won't assimilate. There's no need to. The fact that this "culture" has been legitimized is such a tragedy. This is their way of life now.

Regarding the black community.

It's a community when we're talking privilege, it's not when we're talking responsibility.

I don't want to talk about privilege, but race gets played up a whole lot until we start talking about statistical anomalies that are attributed to society rather than the group in question.

With Straws? Any week, in any thread. He's pretty fired up about Jesus's existence. Almost to a psychotic degree.

Yup. And the ideals of the American dream aside, the vast majority of us will take the easiest route to support ourselves. I consider myself a dedicated worker, but if I were to come into an obscene amount of money tomorrow, I'd walk from my job without a second thought. Same works in reverse. If staying on welfare is less of an economic risk than actively seeking employment, it only follows that most on welfare will be loathe to risk leaving it. Blaming them from our perch of being in a better situation (not saying that's what you have been doing btw, just speaking in general), unfairly demonizes them for taking advantage as best as they can of a system that discourages proactivity.

I haven't actually debated it in a while, I just make tongue-in-cheek jabs with it these days.

No, that is what you assume. I've said there's no black community in your white privilege threads too

Acknowledging a group as a minority does not make them a community.

We came to the same conclusion, I just had to be more confrontational about it

When saying they're disparaged as a whole to any degree you are tacitly acknowledging them as a community -- whether or not you like to admit it.

There's just no good way to talk about THEM (welfare, criminal, thug black people) without implying judgment on THEM (all Americans of sub-Saharan African descent). Like I said, we need an equivalent of "white trash" that is socially acceptable for whites and blacks to use. There isn't one.

Most white people aren't even conscious or focused on their own race, either, which is why there's almost never a "white community" reference...

Unless it's being made by racist kids from Ferguson who assume police discrimination are white problems.

Incorrect. My assertion that there are inherent disadvantages to being a minority do not necessitate that all minorities are a community. They may share a physical characteristic, but black people are no more a community than blondes or redheads (soulless beings that they are, of course ).

Many different people across the socioeconomic spectrum can share the characteristic of being a minority and have no other cogent similar characteristics. Therefore the "community" label is as lazy as it is bogus.
