Culturally True. But the whole state was part of the confederacy, so by the strictest definition of what a southern state is, it fits.

yes, Bill. I consider "from" to be where one grew up. She's from Chicago I think.

Most southern states place social issues over those that actually matter when voting, so you end up with politicians focused on gay marriage and abortion legislation.
Posted on 3/14/15 at 4:33 pm to Roger Klarvin
That is so true. Imagine an election where the issues were economic and not social. I doubt it'll ever happen.

This is why I've been a Libertarian for nearly 20 years.
That being said, you could also point out all the morons on the West Coast and North East from the other party that are as economically clueless as the southern conservatives are about social issues.

Anymore, very few run for state or national office who aren't fools. The best and brightest don't even consider national office. The citizen-legislator is a myth of the past. Now politics is a family business for most

Jindal started out great but has thoroughly fricked us in his last term

Rand Paul is doing the same thing. I was hoping he would ignore the social issues and campaign against big government. Unfortunately he has to kiss social conservatives' asses to get support against important economic concerns. I wouldn't be a politician for all the gold in Fort Knox.

Roy Moore is a fricking joke. Total fluke he was elected. Hopefully, we will fix that next cycle.
How about Sessions running unopposed in his district after being involved in that Congressional insider trading deal? He's a fricking joke along with Shelby. We need to redraw these gerrymandered district lines and implement term limits for these clowns. They should also be forced to telecommute to Washington DC and live in their districts full time. I see no reason for them to be in Washington.

Those aren't the ones I'm worried about

Add Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker to that list of shite.
They couldn't get more useless. They enjoy playing 'sane' senator (Corker) and elder statesman (Lamar!) these days but it's just a matter of them presenting well when the cameras are rolling.
We need to shake things up, imo. Elect BOTH democrats and republicans no matter how much voting for the other team gives you the ickies. Right now, both sides know they can do whatever they want and be as dumb as they want because they know their states are either blue or red with nothing in between and we voters will punch the ticket based on party. IF we voters start to change that we will see a return to prior Eras where pols worked together and compromised (withing reason) for the greater good.
These were much more pragmatic pols who had our interests in mind rather than whatever interest group camps out at their office and delivers the $$$ on the side and in the campaign. IT CAN RETURN but only if we do something about it no matter how much it might pain party people.
It's not healthy that too many states have become one party in all but name and it leads to idiots in office.

Do you consider northern politicians to be a step up from southern, equal, or a step down? Why?
Posted on 3/14/15 at 8:59 pm to RockyMtnTigerWDE
Yep, that's why we need to start voting Libertarians into office, regardless of which party banner they run under. However, the Democrat party is so far left when it comes to economics, I don't think they'd ever allow a Libertarian into their tent, but if they did I'd vote for them.

This is an SEC board so it's really not about them. Besides, we pay the price when they do something dumb. Yes there are dumbass northern pols but the region does not take the heat we do.
For frick's sake, Stacy Campfield is from New York and said AIDs came from people having sex with monkeys (no racist code there as he meant literal apes/monkeys), among many other low lights. He was FINALLY taken out this year but do you think ANYONE cared he was from, New York state? frick no. Most people in the state didn't even know.
He was a TN state rep and later tn state senator and that is all that mattered. He's not alone either. Where you rep or claim as home is where you're now from even when it's damaging or embarrassing.
And trust me EVERYONE both republicans and democrats was embarrassed by Stacy Campfield. All that isn't fair but it is modern politics, especially when it comes to embarrassments.

Is that not the origin?

Not in the slightest!
SIV that evolved into HIV-1 likely originated with the bushmeat (or eating apes/chimps).
SIV that evolved into HIV-2 also came from the bushmeat trade and a few transmissions were due to hunters who kept them as pets and got bitten/exchanged blood. Hunters in general would have cuts, bites and scratches where blood could get in.
However, the bushmeat trade was responsible for the jump/evolution to humans. Keep in mind that apes and chimps are ~98 percent human and many diseases can be contracted between the two. While much like today it was still blood borne, SIV was able to finally jump because so much bushmeat equaled the meat trade. They'd slaughter/butcher, prep and handle infected meat with cuts etc.
So no. He could not be more wrong about how it made it's way to humans (also consider: a chimp or an ape could kill the strongest man alive in a heartbeat). Exposure to infected blood be it with cuts, bites, lacerations, or even tiny tears the person can't see, much like with modern HIV, is the culprit. THAT allows it in.
ETA: It does appear to be the method for certain unnamed schools. How they acquired chimps/apes to have sex with is anyone's guess.

Nah, the most likely origin is the bush meat industry in central and west Africa back in the first half of the 20th century. The earliest reported cases of what we now believe to be HIV were seen in those involved in the killing and skinning of small primates.
