Because we only have fools to choose from.

Rural America is pretty stupid and fearful. South Georgia and Alabama are not really much different.

OP: If you want to take this down to the state level, you could include the entire state legislature of Florida. Thank God the hijinks of the elected officials here are confined to the state, and their follies, greed and stupidity are largely unknown outside the swamplands.

All politicians are self seeking liars. The best we can do is try and choose the lesser of two evils.

Your list seems to be rather exclusive.

Rick Perry

These are the current political faces of the South.

Incorrect.

Rick Perry is a Texan and is the political face of Texas. Please revise your list.

Thank you

ETA: Also, Agforlife is correct.

This is the correct answer. It is why I want to go off grid somewhere. Complete loss of faith in our government.

The one that really gets me is Lindsey Graham. How does that guy appeal to anyone at all?

We don't like that bone smoker either.

SC is the polically diverse Southern state in the union .... and they are all famous on a national scale.

Lindsay appeals to the moderate GOPers who have moved here from up north and the half-backers fleeing Miami headed back to NYC who decide to live here instead.

I hate fricking damn Yankee transplants and half-backers .... like cockroaches they breed and ruin wherever they go ... and they are responsible for Lindsay Graham.

My friend Joe Wilson famously shouted "you lie!" at Obango.

My old friend Jim DeMint is now head of The Heritage Foundation.

My old friend Mark Sanford .... The Love Gov, is a helluva guy.

Jim Clyburn ... the only liberal progressive - he's a dumbass. He gets 95% of the black vote.

Tim Scott .... great guy. Black Tea Party Conservative .... replaced Jim DeMint.

Trey Gowdy - have yet to meet him. Part of the SC new guard Tea Partiers.

Nikki Haley ... she's doing okay for a woman. She's got good, strong, principles.

Not another state in the U.S. with that kind of political diversity.

Roy Moore is my biggest gripe in Alabama, and I've got plenty of them. Bentley is terrible also.

Everyone who isn't from the South sees Texas as a part of the South. Most Texans and Southerners will admit that while Texas is different, it's still included. Anybody who's been to the piney woods, which is roughly the population of Mississippi and could be a state by itself, will tell you that it's about as southern as you can get. So I must take exception to this.

East Texas is very much like the rest of the South.

Every state does this. California is worse than the entire South combined.

If you voted for Obama your opinion just got discounted. Although there is some truth in what you say. Sheila WTF Lee from Texas for example. In Florida Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Alcee Hastings and lest we forget the ever insane Alan Grayson and Corrine Brown...come on you call THOSE decent legislators? And you just ran off Miss Piggy in Louisiana.

Texas is many different things. The whole state is not to be pigeonholed into "South," imho.

Do certain parts share similarities with the South? Absolutely.

But hardly the entire state. Texas is its own thing, not the South. That's my point.

But not West Texas.

Or South Texas.

Or Central Texas.

Or North Texas.
