For true pedophiles its sexual, they have an inherent sexual desire for pre-adolescent children. Not everyone who sexually abuses kids is a pedophile though, and power can play a role in some cases.
There are pedophiles, just like homosexuals, who claim to have been "cured" by intense psychotherapy. Im very skeptical of such things, buts its at least worth researching.

Speaking from personal experience, yes I'm talking about me, there's nothing in this world that would make me happier than seeing the dead and mutilated corpse of the man who hurt me and my sisters.
We all still have nightmares about it to this very day, despite it being over 25 years ago. Death is too good for people who frick with kids.

The attraction is almost always rooted in some form of sexual abuse from a younger age. The majority of pedophiles were sexually assaulted when they were younger. This is where the exhibiting power thing comes into play, similar to "grooming" younger children. It's all a matter of being the 'father' and ensuring that they are dominant.
Like I said, it's sexual in nature, but the vast majority do it as a matter of power, not of exclusive sexual attraction.

Im sorry to hear about that, and even more sorry that it has affected you so extensively all these years. I dont have any right to tell you how to feel about it, just stating my opinion. I wont shed any tears over dead rapists, though.
