Educate me on shaving, men of the OTB

So, for the past 25 years I've used an electric razor. Just found it easier and quicker, but I don't get a very good shave, especially under my chin, and I'm going back to a razor and shaving cream.
I bought a Gillette Fusion Proglide and matching shaving cream and have been using it for a week. It's OK.
What should I try? And since I haven't done this forever, do I need to put anything on before shaving to help, or what tips should I try. Also, how often do you swap out the blades?
Edited for correction from Carolina Girl

If you want to get a really good shave, and save a bunch of money on razors and blades, this is what you need...
But there's a learning curve on using them.

I use the Fusion products. They're expensive as shite, but anything that gives a good shave will probably be so.
Tip I learned from my dad 50 years ago when I first started shaving: shave your toughest areas--the ones most likely to nick, like under your nose and chin--last. That gives the shaving cream time to soften up the skin, reducing the chance of nicks.
As a going away to college present, my dad bought me a couple packs of Trojans. He was a great dude.

Here's all the education you need on shaving: don't do it.
I haven't shaved in 3 years. Just trim and maintenance/ upkeep. Happiest 3 years of my life.

Buy a middling (not super cheap disposable) razor.
I shave in the shower. Using soap. Shaving cream is a waste of money.
If you dry the razor after you use it (some people wipe them with a mineral or vegetable oil, but I just make sure mine is dry), it will last a very, very long time. Many months. Your facial hair does not dull the blade. Oxidation does. If you have to replace the blade cartridge more than once every 4-5 months, you're doing something wrong.

Without a comma, I read this as if you are asking to be educated on how to shave the men of the OTB.
I think you meant "Educate me on shaving, men of the OTB."
Yeah, yeah..grammar nazi supreme. I kinda like it better the way you didn't intend it, personally.

Harry's products are good. The occasional times that I clean shave, I use Harry's cream and blade and it gives a nice smooth shave.

This. I've been maintaining a stubble for about 6 months now just to try it out and I don't think I'll ever go back to being clean shaven. Just a trim up for me. It seems like all the younger guys are doing now.

I shave my neck. Other than that I look like the stereotypical veteran.
Oh wait, I don't wear "Don't Tread On Me" shirts"

I have a whole set of gear that I acquired over the years, but I do have two NineLine shirts. I don't want to be a walking stereotype on campus. It's bad enough that I'm always 15 mins early to class.

Just don't wear your PT safety belt to class!
I know a guy who is friends with the owner of Ranger Up & Article 15 Clothing so my FB is littered with that shite.
9 Line does make a sweet hooded sweatshirt with a CCW holster built into the pouch. I'd buy it.

How did you manage to exercise safely without proper reflective gear!?!?!
I never understood that shite.
I was like, dude it's 5am on an Army post - who exactly or what do you expect to be on the road???
