Yes, but like you, I feel as if I am just speaking to an empty, solitude existence.

It feels as if the only person who listens and hears what I pray about is me.

Very interesting thread. I don't know if anyone is listening, but I agree it is worthwhile to admit that we are not always capable of doing everything for ourselves. I think prayer and meditation both use the same parts of our brains, and it's good to exercise that part of our body just like any other part.

As for the big question, I've always believed in Pacal's wager.

Pascal's wager brings up some truly abstract and interesting paradigms. If you're praying simply out of fear of what could happen in the absence of prayer, I would assume that whatever "higher power" that exists would interpret that solely as self- serving and not doing so because of a firm, dedicated belief in the existance of God. If that, in fact, turns out to be how the belief system works, there would then be a domino effect that would be set in motion by our doubt/ disbelief.

Long and short of it, it is not something that I will blindly follow. I am the kind of person who will explore the possiilities, supporting evidence and, I must admit, to a lesser degree my "gut" feeling or instinct regarding the existence.

I want it to be true, though. I sincerely do. I lost my 7 month old son to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and the idea that I will be reunited with him, be able to hold him and love him, would be the most complete, perfectly amazing and miraculous gift ever.

Very sorry for your lost. I believe that all the children are with Jesus. The Bible says in Matthew 19:14, "Let the little children come to Me." What a wonderful place for him to be. He is in very good hands indeed.

I believe this is your answer Carolina Girl. The great promise to those who seek the Lord is that He will be found. “If you seek Him, He will be found by you”, 1 Chronicles 28:9. And when He is found, there is great reward.

Peace be with you.

Yes.

I believe it's a different experience for different people though. God doesn't speak to all of us the same.

I feel this way until I see God working in the lives of others. I know He's working in mine I just can't always tell.

Every night I ask my kids and my wife what they are thankful for today and then we hold hands and pray before dinner and I ask the Lord to watch over our friends, family, and the troops to keep them safe and healthy. Sometimes it is just important to stop and realize all the wonderful things that we do have in this life and how blessed we are.

I find far more happiness comes from appreciating the blessings we have rather than asking for things we want.

Yeah, I guess I should elaborate on that a little. I'm not sure Pascal's Wager directly applies to the prayer question. The way I've always heard it explained by teachers and people who gave more thought to religious questions than I did is this: Live as if there is a God who is good and just; even if it turns out not to be true, you still will have lived a good life.

It's just a longer way of saying treat others as you wish them to treat you.

I agree with TBird that people can experience religious faith in different ways, and it's difficult to summarize in online postings. But this thread has been a good discussion.

Yes sir. It's been a long time since I prayed to ask for anything.

This is so true in my experience.

Also, my faith changed (for the better) as an adult when I realized that some of the requests I'd prayed for that didn't come to pass would have prevented me from receiving greater blessings or being a blessing for someone else.
