I've never been much of a praying man, and certainly not religious. For the last week I've prayed for my mom, who's spent the last 2 weeks in the hospital.

It's kind of humbling, to admit when you're powerless and scared, and I need that some times.

Heart goes out to you, man. Think I touched on it before but my ma' is the most important person in my life right now. I wouldn't be where I am without her.

Hope she gets better soon.

All you have is the self. Putting your faith in a "higher power" is just bypassing the self and playing pretend.

Everything you want is within you, right now.

I try to pray but I feel like I'm just talking to myself.

People tell me that God speaks to them and shite but I just don't believe them. I think the human mind has the capacity to come to special realizations about life and the world around us and maybe people call that God speaking to them.

I don't know. We say a prayer with my 2 yr old before bed every night but sometimes I feel like it's just bullshite and it makes me sad that I feel that way.

Well i have a story that directly relates to prayer so here it goes.

My pastor and his wife can't have kids, so they ended up adopting three boys, which were brothers. The youngest was diagnosed last year with MD. Well he has been getting noticeably weaker, such as walking kind of funny, can't go up any stairs, etc. Well after every sermon, the boy (5 year old) walks up to the front during invitation, and my pastor and him pray for healing. They have been praying this since he was diagnosed. Well, they went to the doctor last week, and somehow the boy is getting stronger. Doctor said he has never seen this before, but the boy is stronger by a great deal than last visit.

Tbh, I have personally seen many healings, I know atheist will say I'm delusional, but I was quite a skeptic, not anymore.

Jesus y'all.

Point is prayer is very powerful, but you HAVE to pray in faith.

Tl;dr:
Boy with MD getting stronger, prayer works.

Don't fret... This happens once you have kids anyway.

I believe in God, but I struggle with prayer. I don't know what to say to those who believe in "magical" prayer.

At some point, I think if we put ourselves in a position to "hear" or "feel" God- it may happen. Beauty, hope, and love are all nebulous concepts, but I believe in all of those.

I guess we either have "essence" or we don't. I think there is a spiritual dimension to our existence. Good and evil certainly exist. We know inherently that some things are morally wrong and unfair.

Yeah, I feel that. I mean, I really want to believe in God and I've spent the past year really digging into what I believe and why I believe it. Sometimes I just get discouraged and I think the main reason I have trouble is that there are a ton of people who believe in God and decide to speak for God that I find myself just wanting nothing to do with any of it.

I've been told that encountering a bunch of shitty people is a terrible reason to give up on God and that's probably true.

I've never given up on God, but I was afraid to give up on Christianity because I thought they were one in the same. They aren't. It's not easy, but if Christianity doesn't makes you happy, then don't force it upon yourself. And worst case scenario you can return and get Prodigal Son favoritism too.

I pray with my kids at night. My 10 year old son and 5?year old daughter will not go to sleep unless I pray with them. As for me, I talk to God throughout my day. I question him when I am frustrated and praise him when I am thankful. I never ask for anything in particular. Only that he lead me to act in accordance to his will even if it means some sort of suffering for me in the short term. I have had stage IV cancer twice in the last 5 years and I never asked to be healed. Only that his will be done. I was given a 30% chance of survival by my doctors the second go round. However, something gave me the peace not to worry and that it was not my time to go....yet. My prayers during my stay (70+ days) at Emory varied from frustration to praise depending on my mood at the time. I firmly believe God does not demand we pray in "lily white" fashion all the time. Your fears , frustrations , and doubts should be laid bare before him. If you are mad at him.....tell him. My prayers of anger or frustration were filled with questioning about his will. If it were my time to go, so be it, I just can't understand it. But if my passing would effect a greater purpose , let's get on with it. In the fray, he gave me a peace that my time had not yet come. It was not an audible voice, rather. a peace and assurance that I can't even begin to describe. I stopped worrying and began planning my life for when I got better.

My communication with God underwent a major renovation during this time. I learned not to pray for an outcome I desired as I had previously done all my life. I learned to express myself to God in a way that was real and human. From anger, to frustration, to doubt. It was during this time that I grew closer to God than ever before as it was then that I felt closet to him. It is okay, and I believe preferred by God that you express these emotions to him. Get it off your chest so to speak. He will give you a peace beyond understanding whether the potential outcome is to your desire or not.

I try to pray every night before bed... I go through stretches where I feel like I'm wasting my time.

It's hard to really feel that closeness when you're tired and in bed. I find that I have spiritual moments when I'm at the farm and have time to take a minute and appreciate the sunrise or sunset, or there's some kind of scenery that is beautiful, or just watching animals in their natural habitat. That's when I think about my faith and give thanks for what I have, or think about things upcoming things that I think will be tough. I just take a deep breath, appreciate the moment, say a quick thanks to God, maybe ask for a little help, and get back to what I was doing.

Something intestinal, at first they thought it was a twisted bowel, then she had her gall bladder removed last week, but she still can't eat and is in constant agony.

Went back in the hospital last night.

I feel that you won't ever get a direct answer.

I believe we are put here to make soul progress and if God just answered your prayer without you doing anything what would you achieve? You just have to pay more attention and you'll start having those aha moments.

People tell me that God speaks to them and shite but I just don't believe them.

People could be lying. Your connection to God is your own and it is best to not compare it to others if it will weaken your connection. Faith is hard, especially when you know you will likely never get proof of it that anyone else can see.

I feel like it's just bullshite and it makes me sad that I feel that way.

I'd read more books that would help you connect to God. God made the world so everything must be here for some reason to progress you. Reading stuff like the Bhagavad Gita, the Upinshads, Tao Te Ching, even The Reluctant Messenger of Science and Religion, helped me understand Christ better. The point is you have to go find what helps you to connect and understand.

Topics of religion will scare off people. But then, are those people really helping you get to the end goal that you want and need?

Yes. I dont always get the answer until much later. Took a long time to realize that sometimes the bad in my life isnt always meant for me either. Sometimes my struggles have found a way to bring about good to someone else. In the end, its not about me...but what I am or should be doing to glorify Him. Sometimes we tend to get selfish and forget to humble ourselves. Imho, of course.
