A dog is only your first line of defense, and even then only as an alarm system.

Dogs are easily poisoned or shot as many an overzealous Cop or desperate crook has proven.

The locks on your doors and windows, as well as your home alarm system, is your second line of defense.

But criminals learned long ago how to get past those.

You are your third line of defense. You will be what stands between harm and your family.

It's your choice how the LEOs end up writing their incident report ... what sort of statistic you choose to be.

A firearm is both a tool and insurance. It can both feed and protect your loved ones and you when no one else will. History has proven that over and over again.

We're not the most well-armed society in the world, just the largest. Israel is the most well armed ... ask yourself why, then realize that it is coming here eventually.

The first step to a dictatorship is always disarming the citizenry. Our forefathers warned us against letting it happen. We'd be absolute fools to allow it to happen.

And oh, BTW, our military and most of our LEOs would never allow it to happen. Only the UN could even try and foreign troops would be massacred in this country if they were to try and our leadership that allowed it ... they would not like what would happen to them.

Look at it this way.

Since Obango was elected there hve been enough guns and ammo sold to private citizens in this country ... to outfit the five largest armies in the world. Think about that. Fifty*five million firearms and seven billion rounds of ammo sold to private citizens in this country in the last six years. That's not counting all the FTF transactions nor the guns that were already owned by us prior to 2008.

Obango is definitely the gun salesman of the decade.

But guns we can get right now. It's the ammo the POS has cut us off from. That's the new liberal progressive strategy. Block us from the ammo.

Yea cool. All I'm saying is that as far as home security goes I'd rather buy a dog than a firearm. It's about low hanging fruit. Someone determined to do bad things won't be deterred by my dog or my firearm. The average crook casing homes is likely to notice my GSD and pick another house because it's simply not worth the effort. For me to get a similar effect with a firearm I'd have to sit outside with it 24/7 and that's not going to happen.

The rest of your post is going down a line I don't want to follow. I'm not anti-gun and I'm not saying that people shouldn't own them, I'm just saying I personally don't chose to maintain private firearms for everyday self/home defense. I don't feel the need.

Doesn't hurt to have both. Having a firearm in the house is only a problem if the owner is a total idiot.

primers and powder are scarce as well. Hell .22 ammo is selling for $75 for a 550 round box around here, when you can find it. Fortunately, 5.56 is plentiful.

Yea, for the people that feel the need definitely buy one for home defense, that's just not me, I own a firearm but not for that. Not sure what rooster is trying to convince me about. I'm not going to go buy a handgun to prevent a dictatorship, that's silly.

People get so worked up about the ideological reasons for having firearms.

Individually, a person having a firearm is good only for individual protection and sport. Collectively, they do serve a purpose whether folks want to agree or not.

Yea that (the ideological argument) isn't a road I originally wanted to go down. Rooster took it there. I was just stating my personal preference for home defense and my approach to firearms.

Yea, too bad Hitler and the Nazis enacted stiffer gun laws when they came to power.

Here's what Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn said about resisting mass government oppression under Stalin.

quote:

And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?… The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin’s thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If…if…We didn’t love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation…. We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.

1 gun doesn't stop an army. Or a police force. But every gun does.

So you think that armed civilians can stop organized government oppression. Cool. I don't believe that but you do and that's just fine.
